DISTRICT CHILDREN’S PICNIC
RAILWAY SOCIAL CLUB’S FUNCTION The combined Railways’ Social Club entertained the children of the Wairio district at Birchwood recently, the occasion being a picnic on the property of Mr G. S. Edie, chairman of the Ohai Railway Board. The children and parents were carried over the board’s line by the running staff of the Ohai Railway Board .. free of charge. The outing which took the form of a picnic and games concluded with races for the children and adults. Mr C. H. Withers, chairman of the club, thanked the parents for their attendance and for the capable way in which they catered for the children in the way of lunch, sweets, fruit and ice cream. He felt sure that every child, as well as the adults, had thoroughly enjoyed the outing. He also expressed his thanks to Mr G. S. Edie for his kindness in allowing the use of his property for the occasion. The following were the results of the sports run during the afternoon: — Small children’s race, R. Keen 1, S. Pope 2, R. Burgess 3; girls (5 to 6), J. Valli 1, A. Nisbet 2, D. Flynn 3; girls (6 to 7), B. Cutt 1, D. Burgess 2, M. Gibbs 3; boys (6 to 7), W. Gardner 1, W. Forde 2, D. Gunn 3; girls (7 to 9), M. Edie 1, P. Cutt 2, M. Gibbs 3; boys (7 to 9), J. Gunn 1, S. Murphy 2, A. Barnfield 3; girls (9 to 12), R. Bonisch I, B. White 2, P. Forde 3. boys (9 to 12), M. Gibbs 1, R. Murphy 2, R. Forde 3; boys (12 and over), I. Pope 1, A. Beck 2, R. Bates 3 three-legged race, R. Gunn and R. Forde 1, R. Bates and B. Forde 2, Misses P. Gunn and D. Forde 3; women’s relay race, Miss Bonisch’s team 1, Miss E. Keen’s team 2, Miss P. Wither’s team 3; men’s relay race, F. Forde’s team 1, M. Barnfield’s team 2, J. Cutt’s team 3.
