OHAI RAILWAY BOARD

OFFICERS’ MONTHLY REPORTS

The monthly meeting of the Ohai Railway Board was held in the board’s rooms, Wairio, when there were present Messrs G. S. Edie (chairman), L. S. Edmonds, W. Adcock, D. D. McDonald, E. Davis, W. Crawford and G. Tinker. The general manager (Mr A. W. Rodgers) and the traffic manager (Mr R. Donnelly) were also in attendance. The general manager reported that during the week ended December 9 the mines in turn were idle for a day or more for boiler inspection which had not taken place previously so near to the holidays. The effect had been quite- a considerable decrease in the output of coal compared with the same period last year-. The net increase in haulage for the expired portion of the financial year compared with the same period in 1938-39 was now ;2026 tons, whereat when he last reported it was 3376 tons.

No official reply had been received from the provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union. The letter written in accordance with the resolution of the board at the last meeting was considered. The chairman said that before any discussion was taken on the matter he wished to state that it was not the wish of the executive to give offence to any section or bodies with which it dealt and at the same time' expressed regret that any offence had been taken by individual members of the board because he was sure that the executive had not intended to endorse any statements with such effect. This report appeared on the same page of the newspaper as did the previous report which contained the matter to which the board took exception. PASSENGER TRAINS Public notice has been given that in conformity with the board’s decision, on and after January 8, the morning and evening services on the board’s line connecting at Wairio with the trains on the New Zealand railways will cease to run except that on Mondays the morning train will run to connect with the outward train from Wairio on the Government line and on Fridays the evening train will run to connect with the inward train at Wairio on the Government line. The traffic manager reported that since the last board meeting the permanent way gang had been employed in cleaning out cuttings and weeding the track on the extension. Attention had also been given to the removal of truck sweepings from the Linton Company and the Black Lion Company sidings at Ohai.
