BUNTING DISPLAY IN CITY
GOVERNMENT OFFICES BEFLAGGED
HISTORIC DATES TO BE RECOGNIZED Bunting flying from Government buildings in Invercargill yesterday gave the city an atmosphere of festivity. For the first week of the New Years, and also on the main centennial dates flags will be flown from Government buildings in Invercargill and. elsewhere. The bunting appeared over some buildings yesterday and some flags were strung across the new Post Office. In accordance with the usual procedure the flags at the mastheads will be lowered at sunset and will not be flown on Sundays. Floodlighting will be used in other centres but facilities are not available in Invercargill. The flags will also appear on the following historic dates in the. New Year:—
January 22: One hundredth anniversary of landing of first settlers of New Zealand Company at Wellington. January 30: One hundredth anniversary of landing of Captain Hobson at Kororareka, Bay of Islands. February 6: One hundredth anniversary of affixing first signatures to Treaty of Waitangi. June 5: One hundredth anniversary of proclamation over Stewart Island. June 17: One hundredth anniversary of proclamation over South Island at Cloudy Bay. August 11: One hundredth anniversary of first exercise of sovereignty over South Island at Akaroa. October 9: Anniversary of first landing in New Zealand of Captain Cook. November 16: One hundredth anniversary of separation of New Zealand from New South Wales, and final day of celebrations.
