DOUBLEACK TO START

Southland Horses For Wingatui CHIRP A HOLIDAY PROSPECT Acceptances for the Wyndham meeting close on Friday. Wild Career’s Eider Wild Career will be ridden at Wingatui by P. Spratt In Favour The early favourites for the Otago Handicap are Sovereign Lady, Peony Rose, Sailing Lady and Norseman. A Big Drop Twelve months ago Alma was unplaced in the Otago Handicap with 8.3. This year she has been dropped to 1.0. Spanish Lad Few of the sprinters at Wingatui have better credentials than Spanish Lad, who is right at the top of his form. Chirp’s Form i Chirp’s form at the Cup meeting at Riccarton was much above average and the Full Feather mare looks certain to pay her way during the holi- ’ days. Has Improved Eire’s Ruin has improved greatly with recent work. As a two-year-old last season the Irish Lancer filly showed plenty of ability but she aid not stay on. She has improved greatly in this direction. Improvements at Riverton Several improvements are being made to the appointments at the Riverton Club’s course. A small totalizator house, in which the totalizator dials will be erected, has been built, while the stewards stand is being added to. To Ride Gay Lancer Gay Lancer, who promises to start one of the favourites for the Trial Handicap at Wingatui on Saturday, will be ridden by J. W. Dooley. Novice Hurdler Spendthrift is to start in the hack sprint the first day at Wingatui, but it is likely that he will make his debut as a hurdler later at the meeting. The stable has Milford to represent it in the hurdle race the first day, m which he will be ridden by T. J. Boyle. For Wingatui Mr W. E. Hazlett’ will take Milford, Spendthrift and Sparkle through to Wingatui tomorrow and they will be accompanied by Wild Career. 7 • Ellis, J. A. Rowland and R. E. McLellan will go through to Wingatui on Friday. Riverton Horses M. Corkery will take Kippen through to Wingatui - today or tomorrow when R McNay will also leave with Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy. A. McKay’s team -—Peony Rose, Philibeg and Boaform will probably leave on Thursday and Gold Flight on Friday. Stable elect Boswell was not paid up for the first day of the Dunedin meeting, but there is nothing amiss with him and he will be taken to Wingatui "with other members of R. E. McLellan’s team. The Balboa stallion will be reserved for the principal events on the second and third days, while his stablemate Sailing Lady will tackle the Otago Handicap, on Saturday. Will be Tested Cetewayo has won the only race in which he started, and it is suggested that he is one of the best two-year-olds of the season. His victory was achieved in a minor handicap, and his quality will be more severely tested if he tackles Absolve at Awapuni.

An Auckland Cup Candidate Balinavar has been a very consistent performer this season, as out of seven starts he has finished second six times and was third in the other start. He has 7.7 in the Auckland Cup, and is by a sire of good stayers in Acre from Spring Song, a mare by Nigger Minstrel from the Nassau mare, Kitty Barlow. Balinavar is now five years old, and last season out of 19 starts won four races, was second in five, and third in four. Consistent Record Gladynev, who won the ■’ Te Awamutu Cup, was not nominated for the big race at Auckland, a fact which may now be regretted, as he is bred to stay any distance. Gladynev (Musketoon — Caviare) is a three-year brother to Rona Bay, a little mare who did some racing in the South Island. His analysis this season reads three wins and a second in four starts. Musketoon is by Stedfast, and Caviare is by Lucullus from Minsk, by Martian from the Stepwak mare Stephanie. Dark Flight It is reported that Dark Flight was struck out of the Federal Handicap owing to dissatisfaction with the weights. Dark Flight has only been twice out of a place in seven starts, comments “Sentinel.” He won over five furlongs at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting and was somewhat injudiciously started twice in the heavy going and stopped at the finish of the Vauxhall Handicap. He finished fourth to Great Swoop 8.4, Blazealong 7.7, and Sparkle 8.0, with 8.9 in the Kaikorai Handicap. Then came a win at Gore followed by his best form up to date. Dark Flight was third with 7.0|- in the Stewards’ Handicap to Beaulivre 8.10 and Sleeveless B.4—six lengths away in Imin llsec. He won the Avon Handicap with 7,10 in Imin 9 2-ssec from Brunhild 8.7 and Rakahanga 8.0, and the Members’ Handicap with 7.11 in Imin 9 4-ssec. Dark Flight was meeting Kilrobe on 141 b worse terms than when they met in the Avon Handicap, and it is doubtful if that would be sufficient to bring them together. Spanish Lad 8.7 was fourth in the Winter Cup, and won in moderate company at Invercargill. Dark Flight would very probably beat him at a difference of 21b as it is more than doubtful if Spanish Lad could equal the form displayed by Dark Flight at Riccarton. Willie Win has been out of form for about two years, and Top Row has not won since February of last season when he won the Craven Plate with 8.4. Top Row has been unplaced in his last 10 starts. The others are in their right place at the tail of the handicap.
