DARK HAZARD’S SUCCESS

NED WORTHY UNLUCKY AT TIMARU LUCKY' JACK’S ATTEMPT AGAINST TIME Acceptances for the Winton meeting close at 7 o’clock tonight. A Change Blue Logan, who is engaged at the Ashburton meeting next week, is now a member of R. B. Berry’s team. In Favour Great Jewel, Red Flush and Springfield Globe are among the early favourites for the Auckland Trotting Cup. An Attraction It is likely that at the Winton Trotting Club’s annual fixture on December 30 Rocks Ahead will attempt to lower Harold Logan’s mile record for the track of 2min llsec. This was put up in 1933. Unlucky Ned Worthy was one of those caught on the wrong foot ini the Kerrytown Handicap, and the ground he lost was more than sufficient to account for his defeat. While a good deal below the Nelson Eddy standard, the Wyndhamowned four-year-old is sure to win good races. Three Tens Three Tens tangled at the start of the Levels Handicap on Saturday. He quickly made up the deficiency, but he appeared to be hanging rather badly, and. finally retired with a damaged sulky wheel. A Betting System A system with many backers is to support a horse in its second start after it has run into a place earlier sin the day, and those who kept strictly to the system reaped the benefit on Saturday. Red Pigeon, who had run second to Nelson Eddy, later ran second to Lightning Lady, while Colonel Axworthy, -who was runner-up to Loyal Rey, paid double figures when he won the concluding event. Dark Hazard Dark - Hazard, at one time regarded as a very promising pacer, appeared as an unhoppled trotter at Washdyke, and gave a finished display, reports The Press, Christchurch. His previous effort without the hopples was at the New Brighton meeting in October, when he practically took no part in the race. He claims an engagement in the Winslow Handicap at Ashburton, and a repetition of Saturday’s form will find him handy at the finish. Milestone Although Milestone has been paid up for in two events on the opening day of the Auckland meeting, his race at Timaru on Saturday did not give his trainer, R. W. Franks, much encouragement. Milestone, who appears a bit nervous, made a slow.but steady beginning, and he was soon giving away a good start. At the end of half a mile he broke badly, and repeated the performance later. Apparently, Milestone has plenty of speed, but is in need of racing experience.

Brilliant Speed With the first mile occupying 2min 20sec, the John Hole Handicap at the Timaru meeting on Saturday did not provide a test of -stamina, but it revealed exceptional brilliance in Nelson Eddy. His error at the start was not expensive, as he quickly sprinted into third place, but thereafter the black four-year-old was in every possible pocket, and even three furlongs from home his chance appeared remote. When pulled out and asked to move, Nelson Eddy just paralysed the opposition, and there can be few faster horses of any age in the Dominion. Unfavourable Conditions

The stiff easterly, which had to be faced twice along the straight in a mile test, made it obvious that Lucky Jack had no change of approaching a record on Saturday. The Trotting Cup winner was assisted by Silver Guy (unhoppled), driven by R. Townley, as a galloping pacemaker. The first quarter was covered against the wind at a fast clip, in 30sec, and the half took 62sec. The six furlongs were travelled in Imin 33 2-ssec, but against the wind in the run home the Trotting Cup winner was tiring, and the full mile occupied 2min 6 l-ssec. The quarters were run in approximately 30sec, 32sec, 31 2-ssec, and 32 4-ssec. It has been unfortunate that on both occasions that Lucky Jack has been brought to Washdyke with the object of racing against the clock a strong easterly has wrecked the project.

RESPIRATOR NOT TO COME TO N.Z. SORENESS DEVELOPED BY HORSE (Received December 19, 11.30 p.m. ) SYDNEY, December 19. His stable connections announce that Respirator, who was to have competed in the Centenary Cup at Trentham, will not make the trip because of soreness. Instead, he will be prepared for autumn racing in Australia. High Caste is unlikely to run in the Villiers Stakes here.

Thb New Zealand horse Round Up, who is topweight, 9.3, in the Flying Handicap, will have his first race since his arrival at Victoria Park tomorrow.
