After being entertained by the farm manager, Mr J. Kemp, the party was addressed by Mr H. E. Garrett, of Lincoln Agricultural College, who outlined the nature of the work undertaken at Lincoln, the courses open to students and the subsequent careers for which they might fit themselves. The party then adjourned to the school where Mr Garrett showed films depicting life at Lincoln College, and showing the class of stock carried and the nature of the work engaged in by the students. On behalf of the pupils, Jack Campbell moved a hearty vote of thanks to the farm manager for his hospitality, and the rector (Mr W. J. Bennett) expressed appreciation to Mr Garrett for his visit. In reply Mr Garrett spoke of the enthusiasm met with in the district.

CENTENARY PROGRAMME Winton is to hold its centenary celebrations in February and it has been suggested that one of the main attractions be the roasting of a bullock in native fashion by a party of Maoris. Inquiries are to be made regarding the possibility of including this item on the programme. The week’s celebrations are to begin on Tuesday, February 6 and will conclude on Wednesday, February 21. During that time the streets are to be illuminated with coloured lights. The sum of £lOO is to be spent on the celebrations and one day is to set aside for patriotic purposes.

A comprehensive programme, with details to be finalized later, was drawn up at a public meeting convened by the Winton Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr T. Walker) occupied the chair and there was an attendance of 15 residents at the meeting. The Mayor explained that the preliminary arrangements had received consideration by the Borough Council and the Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee had also discussed the matter and had proposals to put forward. He hoped that the co-operation and assistance of each and every ratepayer and of the people of the district would be forthcoming to make the occasion a fitting observance of New Zealand’s 100th anniversary. Winton had conducted several successful galas in the past and every effort should be made to eclipse all previous records. Those present together with those from whom apologies for absence had been received were appointed as a gen-

eral committee with power to add. A programme, subject to alteration, was drawn up as follows: —

Tuesday, February 6 (actual centenary date): Bonfire to be lighted at 9 p.m. on a suitable area, as will be done in other towns in New Zealand. Sunday, February 11: Pioneers’ Day to be observed in the churches. Monday, February 12: Street sports in the evening to be more of a novelty and amusing nature, than highly competitive. Patriotic garden fete in Anzac Oval. Wednesday, February 14: Annual sports meeting of district schools at the recreation grounds. Tableau of signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in afternoon by the school children followed by the roasting of a bullock. In the evening croquet and bowling greens to be floodlit and matches played. Thursday, February 15: Winton and District Horticultural show. Friday, February 16: Winton Jockey Club races. In the evening Maori concert party in the band rotunda followed by a dance in the Radio Hall. Saturday, February 17: Winton Joc-

key Club races. Wednesday, February 21: Evening sports at the recreation grounds, children’s events predominating. It was agreed to guarantee a gum of £2O to the Central District Schools Sports Association for travelling and other expenses in connection with the centennial sports. Sub-committees and conveners with power to co-opt members were appointed as follows: —Patriotic garden fete, croquet club committee (Mrs W. Hamilton convener); sports, teachers’ committee (Mr W. J. Bennett); kazoo band, Miss D. Wilson; street sports, Mr T. N. Mitchell; bonfire, Mr W. Brandford and Mr R. W. Goodall; dance, Mrs N. Metzger; publicity sub-committee, Mr L.
