DISPERSAL SALE OF WAITORU ROMNEY AND ABERDEEN ANGUS. STUDS THE PROPERTY OF ESTATE LATE SIR WILLIAM HUNT AND MR W. E. HUNT. 2000 Romney Sheep - 80 Aberdeen Angus Cattle THE ROMNEY STUD WILL BE SOLD AT WAITOEU DOWNS, NEAR DACRE, ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1940. ■’ ■ ■ " i iMiS Illites fcx > C■l - * W -’ ■ : t:/. JI H I PH'' B -- THE WAITORU ROMNEY STUD was re-established in 1928 with a special selection of the best quality stud ewes yet sold out of the famous “Waiorongomai” (Mr R. W. Matthews) and “Alloa” (Mr Q. Donald) flocks, and another selection from the same flocks was secured the following year. Additions of specially selected ewes have been made annually from “Waiorongomai.” Ewes were also secured from Mr Donald Macdonald’s “Edendale” flock which was built up largely from the old “Bainfield (almost pure Waiorongomai blood) flock and at the dispersal sale of Messrs Murray Bros.’ “Clydevale” flock and the “Castlerock” flock (Trustees late T. L. Barnhill). As Waiorongomai blood predominated in all these studs, the “Waitoru” Stud can be said today to be practically pure Waiorongomai blood. The first sires used in the Stud were secured from Waiorongomai and included the great breeding ran, Waiorongamai 25/28, a son of the famous sire, No. 4/21. This ram sired Waitoru 13/30, generally admitted by leading North Island judges who have inspected the flock to be one of the best breeding rams in the Dominion. His dam was an Alloa ewe of pure Waiorongomai blood. After being used with great success at “Waitoru” for six years, this ram was exchanged for one of the leading sires at “Waiorongomai” and is now in service there. Several other sons of 25/28 have also been successfully used, and many notable sons of Waitoru 13/30 have also been used successfully in the stud, thus to a very great extent concentrating No. 4 blood. The type of sheep bred in the Stud are bold, low set, splendid constitutioned sheep with great weight of bone and ideal covering. Buyers therefore have the opportunity of securing at this Sale, Romneys representing the best North Island type but with the heavier bone and greater vitality for which Southland-bred sheep are so widely famous. It is worth noting that stud rams exported from this Stud to South America have given the utmost satisfaction. From the point of view of the Romney breed in Southland, it is a tremendous loss that this stud due to the death of the late Sir William Hunt should now be dispersed.’ Last year, there was commenced the first of what was intended to be Annual Sales of the stud and flock rams and these attracted widespread attention. In addition to local buyers, stud rams were purchased by Sir William Perry, of the famous Penrose Stud, Mr R. V. Matthews, of the Waiorongomai Stud, and for the Allow Stud of the late Quentin Donald. As the result of the sale, Waitoru flock rams were also distributed over a wide area of the Dominion and have given satisfaction wherever they have gone. No private sales will be made prior to the dispersal and all sheep will be for Unreserved sale. The offering will comprise approximately 1100 stud ewes, 475 ewe hoggets, 400 ram hoggets, 75 two-shear rams and 22 stud rams of various ages. With the exception of specially selected ram and. ewe lambs which will now be offered for sale, it is intended to reserve the whole of the lambs for sale as hoggets in February, 1941. THE WAITORU ABERDEEN ANGUS STUD which will be sold at Lorneville in March was founded with the I best North Island blood, the whole of the foundation female stock being imported from there, and the only sires used have also been imported from the leading North Island Studs such as the famous Gwavas herd of the Estate A. S. G. Carlyon, the noted Matapihi herd of the late Thomas May and latterly two sires imported from America. The Aberdeen Angus Stud comprises 44 breeding cows with calves at foot by the sires mentioned, 14 yearling heifers, 20 yearling bulls and the imported sires. Catalogues of both Studs are now being prepared and wdl be available in due course from the Auctioneers: WRIGHT, STEPHENSON & CO. LTD. STUB STOCK SALESMEN, Invercargill, Wellington and Branches throughout New Zealand.
