MILKING SHORTHORN ASSOCIATION

NORTH ISLAND MEMBERS AT HALF-YEARLY MEETING

Members from the North Island, North and South Canterbury, and Otago, as well as local members, attended the half-yearly meeting of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association in the United Friendly Societies’ Hall last night. The president of the association, Mr J. H. S. Allan, of Hawke’s Bay, was chairman, and presided over a fair attendance. The organizing secretary, Mr A. W. Green (Hamilton) was also present. Mr Allan welcomed the members and said he was pleased to see so many southern members not only at the meeting, but at the show. He congratulated the exhibitors on the splendid animals they had displayed at the show and said the exhibition was a credit to the breed. Mr Allqn congratulated those members who had won association prizes and made special reference to the champion female, a three-year-old heifer bred and exhibited by Mr G. G. Goodwin (Rangiora). The reserve champion was also a three-year-old heifer shown, by the well-known local breeders Messrs D. Murphy and Sons (Glencoe) The same breeders, he said, had also secured the championship ribbon in the male section with the outstanding aged bull Hollies General 11. The reserve championship award had been secured by Mr F. G. Herridge, of Woodend, Canterbury. The judge of the breed, Mr W. J. Slack (Bunnythorpe) described his decisions in detail and gave a general review of the stock which had come before him at the show. Mr Slack said that he did not expect to see such a high quality of stock in Southland. Many exhibitors, he said, had come a long way with their stock. A remit from the Canterbury branch recommending that the council should adopt the principle of quarterly meetings of an executive committee to control the affairs of the association was adopted. That'the committee is to consist of the president for the year and four delegates, three from the North Island and one from the South Island, was adopted. At the close of the meeting the local branch entertained the visiting members to a social evening, when a short toast-list was honoured.
