SPIRITS SALVAGED YESTERDAY
The Waikouaiti was reported yesterday to be opening up just abaft the funnel, where a break about two feet wide had occurred. The deck was still awash.
Twenty-seven barrels of spirits were brought ashore yesterday in the oyster trawler Marina, which left port at 11.30 a.m. and returned at 3 p.m. It was stated that if the weather was favourable another attempt would be made early this morning to salvage more cargo. A moderate wind was blowing at Bluff last night. It was learned yesterday that no charge had so far been made against several men who were alleged to have removed ship’s gear and cargo from the Waikouaiti. The articles were seized by the police when the boats berthed at Bluff. What the nature of the charge against them will be. is reported to be still under consideration. In a caption *to an illustration in The Southland Times yesterday, it . was wrongly stated that the Waikouaiti had been offered for sale. The position is that the Union Steam Ship Company has simply called for tenders for the salvage of gear, equipment and cargo.
