TEACHER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

GREYMOUTH, December 4. Stated by the police to have misdirected a blow aimed to chastise a boy, Clifford Charles Bowater, sole teacher at the Kokiri School, was fined £2 in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge of assaulting James William Rooney, a nine-year-old pupil. The defendant, who admitted he struck the pupil on the face, resulting in. a black eye and bleeding nose, stated he was under mental stress at the time.
