TURCO’S JUVENILE SUCCESS CHEVAL D’ORO NARROWLY BEATEN Geelong gave a faultless exhibition of trotting to win the Ohai Trial Stakes. After a false start the field went away well and Geelong was the first to show out. With a mile to go he was closely attended by Imperial Wave with Helen s Tower the handiest of the others and the backmarker, Paul Bingen, making up ground. With half a mile to go Geelong had drawn out three lengths clear of Imperial Wave, with Helens Tower and Lenient at the head of the others. Paul Bingen broke at the tar turn and Geelong was clear of Imperial Wave with a break back to Helens Tower turning into the straight. Several horses ran out wide running out of the straight and when the field turned into the back Dunalister was closely attended by Brown Cloud with Roan Direct, on a break, Harbinger and Lady Alwyn at the head of the others. Roan Direct broke down the back again and at the straight entrance Dunalister and Brown Cloud were clear of Harbinger, Lady Alwyn and Roan Direct. In the run home Dunalister stayed on to beat Brown Cloud by a length with Harbinger a length further back third, Lady Alwyn was fourth and the next to finish were Roan Direct, Southern Bond and Northern Sun.

A CLOSE FINISH There was a good finish in the Wairio Trotting Club Handicap when Gentleman Jim stayed on long enough to stave off a late challenge from Stanza, who did not get clear until half way down the straight. Drumbunnif and Stanza were slow to begin and at the end of two furlongs Jimmy Drusus and Overproof were showing the way to Jun, Yon Yan, Stanza and Loyalist. Jimmy Drusus broke running into the back where Stanza ran into second place, while at the far turn Drumbunnif ran up to be third behind Overproof and Stanza. With a round to go Overproof was closely attended by Drumbunnif, Gentleman Jim, Stanza, Peter Young, Yon Yan and Loyalist with Desert Cloud at the head of the. others. Drumbunnif almost fell running into the back and dropped out. Gentleman Jim ran to the front at the home turn and led into the straight from Overproof, Stanza, Peter Young and Yon Yan. Gentleman Jim was well clear at the distance, but Stanza came with a great late run. He failed to get up by a head. Yon Yan was four lengths away third with Overproof, close up fourth. The next to finish were Desert Cloud, Peter Young and Drumbunnif.

JUVENILE STAKES A fine field of three-year-olds paraded for the Juvenile Stakes and the winner Turco proved himself an outstanding colt. Sea Born, Aberbond and Arion Maid made mistakes at the start and the first to show out were Margaret Arion, Turco, Two Crowns and Arion Mac. Phlox tangled running out of the straight and fell. Racing into the back Margaret Arion and Turco led Two Crowns, Arion Mac and a gap back to Cheval d’Oro, who had tangled at the end of two furlongs. With half a mile to go Turco took the lead from Margaret Arion, Two Crowns, Cheval d’Oro and Arion Maid. Cheval d’Oro made up ground on the home turn and followed Turco, Margaret Arion and Two Crowns into the straight with Arion Maid at the head of the others. Turco was doing it nicely a furlong from home and he stayed on in grand style to beat Cheval d’Oro by a length. Margaret Arion was three lengths away third and Two Crowns close up fourth. Arion Mac was at the head of the others. GEELONG AGAIN A penalty of 36 yards did not stop Geelong from winning again and although he appeared to be interfered with at different stages of the running he finished on well to beat Shanghai

Peggy in the Duncan Handicap. Kerrwood Bingen broke up at the start and Shanghai Peggy and Gold Logan were the smartest to begin from Helen’s Tower and .Geelong with . Imperial Wave heading the others. Gold Logan and Geelong had taken charge at the end of half a mile and racing put of the straight they were showing the way to Shanghai Peggy, Imperial Wave and Paul Bingen. With half a mile to go Geelong and Gold Logan were several lengths clear but the former broke twice running to the straight. He quickly recovered his gait and Gold Logan and Geelong led into the straight wide out. Both made mistakes in the run home but Geelong recovered and came on to win by three lengths. Shanghai Peggy beat Gold Logan by two lengths for third with Imperial Wave and Paul Bingen at the head of the others. HAPPY ERIN WINS College Boy refused to take any part in the Wairaki Stakes, while Queen Margaret and Peggy’s Hope also made early mistakes. Kentucky Sun was the smartest to begin and passing the stands he led Southern Bond, Happy Erin and Loyal Emblem. The order was the same into the back where Harbinger made up some ground while Southern Bond dropped out with less than half a mile to go. Kentucky Sun led into the straight from Happy Erin, Loyal Emblem, Harbinger and Pontoon. Harbinger was unable to continue her challenge, while the leader Kentucky Sun began to tire over the last furlong. Happy Erin came away to beat the fast-finishing Pontoon by a length with Loyal Emblem a length and a-half further back third. Kentucky Sun was close up fourth and the next to finish was Harbinger. It was a solid performance on the part of the winner who was always doing his work in solid style. Pontoon was closer at the finish than any other stage. REAL GOLD’S SPRINT Real Gold won the Nightcaps Handicap from end to end. He put a break on his field in the first furlong and although they caught him with half a mile to go he came away again and won comfortably. Icilma and Happy King broke at start and when the field had settled down Real Gold was five lengths clear of Overproof, Dunalister and Drumbunnif. With six furlongs to go Real Gold was 10 lengths clear hut Overproof, Dunalister and Drumbunnif had almost reached the leader at the far turn, where Icilma made up ground but was still a good way back. Real Gold was clear of Dunalister, Drumbunnif and Icilma at the straight entrance. Real Gold stayed on to win comfortably by two lengths from Icilma who finished better than anything else to heat Dunalister by half a length for second. Drumbunnif was close up fourth.
