TRACK IN FAST ORDER

Gentleman Jim Wins Chief Event GEELONG’S DOUBLE SUCCESS A. McLELLAN’S SUCCESSFUL DAY The fourth annual non-totalizator fixture of the Wairio Trotting Club on Saturday was again an outstanding success and the standard of racing would have compared more than favourably with that provided at the majority of country meetings where the totalizator is in use.. In all events fields of excellent strength took part and keen finishes were quite a feature of the day’s racing. The weather was fine but the attendance showed a drop on last year’s figures when an additional attraction was the presence of Logan Derby, an Australian horse who paced an exhibition mile. The gate receipts on Saturday amounted to £33 as compared with £65 for last year s fixture. The track was in fast order and fast times were registered right through. Great interest was shown in the decision of the Juvenile Stakes, in which 10 three-year-olds—all of which are engaged in the Winton and Wyndham classics—were produced. The winner Turco, a colt by Rey de Oro from Wrackoda, secured a popular success as he is trained at Wairio for Mr J. Dempster, of Nightcaps. Cheval D’Oro, who finished'second also impressed greatly, and he is likely to improve on this placing. He is a fine type of gelding by Rey de Oro from a useful winner in Erin’s Princess. The Invercargill trainer, A. McLellan won three races—Geelong (2) and Real Gold, while he was also placed with Yon Yan and Margaret Arion.

Gentleman Jim, who was making his first attempt over two miles, won the Wairio Trotting Club Handicap in solid style, but he had nothing to spare from Stanza, who finished with a great late run. Stanza failed by only a head to reach Gentleman Jim. after giving him a start into the straight. Real Gold won the Nightcaps Handicap from end to end while Geelong won both events for square trotters.

J The meeting was excellently conducted and the events run off with a minimum of delay. The secretary, Mr J. Egan and the president, Mr G. W. Gardner and his fellow stewards, were all enthusiastic workers. Mr M. O’Brien had several close finishes to judge but his decisions were given promptly while the starter, Mr John Walsh, got through a satisfactory day’s work. Results were:—
