WINTON

SCHOOL EXCURSION ARRANGED VISIT TO COLAC BAY A decision to fipld the Winton district schools annual excursion at Colac Bay on February 7, was reached at a meeting, of representatives of district school committees held at Winton. Mr John H. Thomson presided and there were present members from Lochiel, Winton x Browns and Fernhills. Mr Thomson was re-elected chairman of the picnic committee and Mr N. Young was reappointed secretary. The secretary reported that there was a credit balance from last year of £2. A sub-committee was set up to draw up a programme of activities for the picnic. The levy for the various grades of schools was fixed at the same rate as last year. .SCHOOL SPORTS The Central District School Sports Association met recently to arrange for the annual athletic gathering. It was decided to hold the fixture on Wednesday, February 14, during Winton’s centennial celebrations. A strong committee under Mr C. P. Beck (Hedgehope) was appointed to control the various aspects of the meeting. Arrangements are to be made to include a tableau during the afternoon depicting the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, thus commemorating one of the chief events iq the history of New Zealand. BOWLS In a Western district bowling competition match played at Winton, Nightcaps beat Winton by 57 points to 50. Results were:— N. W. Duncan, Robertson, Rutterford, Sice 17 — Moore, Lindsay, Jamieson, Driscoll — 13 Mears, Magee, Brown, Sheddan 26 — Hewitt, Kettle, Dyer, Butler — 13 Carrick, Quested, Spowart, Lyng 14 — Walters, Horn, Murphy, Ward — 24 TOTALS 57 50 PERSONAL Mr T. N. Mitchell, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Winton, is at present on annual leave. Mr C. R. Woolley, of Dunedin, is acting as relieving manager of the Winton branch of the’Bank of New South Wales during the absence of Mr N. G. Pigou,# who is on annual holiday.
