WOMEN’S DIVISION

WEST PLAINS BRANCH The West Plains branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union recently celebrated its seventh birthday with a social and dance, the function being one of the most successful of its kind yet held. The birthday cake carried by Mrs A. Olgivy (secretary) and. Miss J. Taylor (treasurer) was piped around the hall by Mr J. Wright. The candles were lit by Mrs T. T. Smith,, provincial housekeeping secretary, and were blown out by Mrs D. Gordon. The cake.was cut by Mrs G. McDonald, representing the mother branch, Invercargill. Each .of the following women then cut a slice of the cake and conveyed good wishes: Mrs T. T. Smith, Mrs Kennard (provincial secretary), Mrs Gordon (Otar tara), Mrs Martin (Waikiwi), Mrs Anderson (Wrights Bush); Mrs Jack (Roslyn Bush), Mrs Middlemiss (Invercargill), - , Mr G. R. Herron (organizer of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Fanners’ Union) was also present and congratulated the president (Mrs F. W. Lokan) on the success the branch had attained during the last few years. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs W. Orr, provincial president, Mr J. Hargest, M.P., and the Hedgehope and Ryal Bush branches. During the evening items were given by Mrs Ballantine’s party of juveniles and tap dances by Miss D. Counsel. Music was supplied by Ballantine s band and Mr F., W. Lokan was master of ceremonies. ISLA BANK BRANCH At the monthly meeting of . the Isla Bank'branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs McDonald call for the next meeting in February is “Noises I dislike, most.” Mrs Mollison gave a demonstration on hairpin work. A competition was-won by Mrs A. Officer. The best bloom competition resulted: Mrs Pirie and • Mrs Stuart 1 equal. • Hostesses were Mrs Officer and Miss Hazlett. SEAWARD DOWNS BRANCH At the November meeting of the Seaward Downs branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the president, Mrs McCorkindale, presided over a large number of members. It was decided that £3 should be donated to the ministering ftind and £l/10/- to the local' calf club. A demonstration on dressing ■■ fowl for table was given by Mr T. Davidson, Mataura Island Mrs Brumby, of Cameron Home, gave a talk on her work among the homeless boys. Each member present gave some eggs. Mrs Welsh gave two competitions, which were won by Mesdames McCorkindale and Knight. The roll call, a meatless dinner, brought forth many useful and varied suggestions.
