NEED FOR REDUCTION IN IMPORTS

DEPLETION OF AVAILABLE FUNDS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 29. The effect of the United States neutrality legislation on New Zealand’s overseas trade was explained by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) in a broadcast tonight. The Minister, who stressed the necessity of cutting down imports from foreign sources, said that every commodity purchased during the war outside the British Commonwealth depleted the funds available for the purchase of munitions and supplies. New Zealanders could make their major contribution to the assistance of the United Kingdom and France by purchasing goods exclusively of New Zealand origin. Commodities that had to be imported should be obtained as far as possible from the United Kingdom.
