TEMPERANCE UNION
The annual meeting of the Central branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Jed street hall last week. Mrs R. R. McGregor presided over a good attendance of members. The scripture reading and prayer was taken by Mrs J. A. Thomson.
Mrs Watson’s interesting fact for consideration was the late Sir William Osler’s statement, “Mortality rates in pneumonia—Total abstainers, 18 per cent., moderate drinkers 25 per cent., intemperate drinkers 52 per cent.” After the reading of the annual report showing a healthy position in all the work of the branch of which there are 139 members, the election of officers took place resulting in the reelection of Mrs R. R. McGregor as president, Mrs Ruthven, secretary, Mrs Brown, correspondence secretary. The vacancy for treasurer was filled by Mrs Boyd, and Mrs Wesney was appointed devotional superintendent. Mrs Ott moved a vote of thanks to the officers for their untiring work during the year. It was decided to hold the cradle roll picnic in Thomson’s Bush on the last Saturday of November. The usual Christmas donations of cakes for the Borstal Institution jvere made. Mrs McGregor closed the meeting with prayer. A collection was taken in aid of the Victoria Home, and was generously supported.
