CITY RECREATION WEEK

Opening Events Last Evening GREAT INTEREST SHOWN BY PUBLIC Not for many years has the public of Invercargill concentrated its attention on one portion of the business centre of the city in such numbers as last evening when Recreation Week was begun with a short programme of events. Long before 8.30, when the programme was scheduled to begin, a large crowd was assembled in front of Dickey’s premises and by the time the event was in progress more than 1000 spectators were in attendance. Whether their presence was prompted by curiosity or a genuine interest in the proceedings, the crowd was early assembled and most of the onlookers remained until the finish. A large area had been cleared on the west side of Dee street, the City Council having co-operated with the Provincial Council of Sport (which is promoting Recreation Week) in the control of traffic. The events were quickly despatched by the committee in charge of arrangements and the area recreation officer (Mr Lloyd Woods). Eight events, including a roller skating race, a tyre bowling race and a walking race, attracted good entries. Substantial prizes were awarded to place winners in all events. The musical competition, which was expected to be the highlight of the programme and for which a valuable trophy was offering, did not eventuate. Probably a natural reserve in the presence of so large an audience was responsible for an entire absence of entries in this event. Results of the events were as follows:—

100yds Skating Race: P. Douche 1, J. Hodge 2. ' 100yds Youths’ Race: A. Spencer 1, I. King 2. , 100yds Walking Race: W. J. Moir 1, L. Tuffley 2. , 100yds Open Race: J. Kirkland and P. Douche 1 eq. Tyre Race: R. Dawson 1, R. Robbie 2. 100yds Girls’ Race: Norma Dawson 1, Mavis King 2, Joy Bone 3. 50yds Boys’ Race: R. Robbie 1, J. Kirkland 2. . Boys’ Three-Legged Race: A. Spencer and J. Cross 1, G. Speirs and R. Robbie 2. WEEK-END PROGRAMME Recreation week in Invercargill will be continued with a pageant at Rugby Park this afternoon. The programme includes a grand parade and march past, a display by a Boys’ Brigade division and exhibitions of physical exercises by pupils of the Southland Technical College and the Woodlands branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. In addition there will be demonstrations of folk dancing and Highland dancing. Athletic events for the afternoon include 100 yards and 440 yards amateur open races, 100 yards and 440 yards secondary schools races and 75 yards women’s race. During the afternoon a dodgeball contest will be held for a trophy made available for this event. It is hoped that football and hockey clubs, swimming clubs and others will enter teams which are to be of eight competitors each. Entries for all events are to be made on the ground,

Tomorrow morning a mystery excursion train will leave the railway station at 9 o’clock for an unknown destination. One of the' prettiest localities in Southland is to be visited and it is hoped that the public will enjoy a day’s recreation in the country. The walk will be a pleasant stroll for those not so energetically minded as to want a real hike. Excellent swimming and fishing are available. Sugar, tea, milk and hot water are being provided, so that patrons will require only cups and provisions for two meals. Comfortable walking shoes and suitable clothing are recommended. Firearms will not be permitted.
