WAINUI, due at Bluff from Wellington on October 24 and sails the same day for Dunedin and northern ports. (Union Steam Ship Co.). THE FRANKFURT’S CARGO The consignees of 4000 tons of sulphur and smaller quantities of general cargo shipped in the German steamer Frankfurt at New Orleans and Gulf of Mexico ports for Auckland and South Island ports are hoping to make arrangements to have the cargo transhipped. The vessel, which left New Orleans on August 11, and cleared the Panama Canal a week later, is now at Talcahuano, Chile. The consul for Chile at Auckland, Mr J. McKenzie Wilson, is conducting the arrangements for the proposed transhipment of the cargo to Auckland.

NORWEGIAN STANDARD SHIPS A scheme for the building of ships on mass-production lines has been submitted to the Norwegian Department of Commerce. It is proposed that a covered-in-double berth should be laid down on Sjursoya, an island on the outskirts of Oslo Harbour which has been connected to the mainland and is being developed for industrial purposes. The suggestion is that hulls of a standard size (15,000 tons d.w. has been mentioned) should be built and sold to other yards for fitting out, installation of machinery, and so on; about two-thirds of the total cost would thus fall on these fitting-out yards. The hulls would be all-welded. It is estimated that 500 men would be employed and that the yard could produce one hull a month. If the Government and the local authorities favour the scheme it is proposed to form a company. It is estimated that the cost of establishing this "ship building factory” would be about five or six million kroner, and that the preliminary work could be completed in 18 months. The proposal has given rise to a good deal of discussion. On the one hand the opinion is expressed that an output of one hull a month would be impossible with the efnployment of only 500 men. Another point of view is that it is unnecessary to start a new yard to carry through such a scheme, as there is already at least one establishment in Norway which builds hulls, the engines being obtained from elsewhere; this yard, it is said could launch a 15,000-ton hull every two or three months if the skilled workers and the orders were available.
