Centrepoise
Three New Zealand Cup candidates contested the principal handicap at Hastings on Thursday and they monopolized the leading places. The winner, Centrepoise, is one of the , more likely of the numerous lightweights in the Cup, as his middle distance successes have been achieved in a manner which suggests that he will master a longer journey. He is forward’' in condition, without having lost his freshness, and he should be at his best in November. Lady Furst, the runner-up, is a very nice mare. She had not raced for some time, but had done a lot of track work. She was in charge a furlong from home and should be better as a result of the race. However, when Centrepoise was called on he beat her nicely and may be the better stayer. Old Hunting Cat filled third place, but the other two beat him too decisively for any great heed to be taken of his chance at present.
