OTAUTAU

MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB The Otautau Miniature Rifle Club concluded its 1939 season with a smoke concert held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s club room. There was a good attendance of members. The president, Dr W. B. Reekie, was chairman. The president presented the championship cup to the 1939 champion, Mr J. C. Macdonnell. Dr Reekie said that he had done his best to have his own name inscribed on the trophy for the second year of the club’s activities, but the winner made no contest of the matter by finishing the season with six consecutive possibles. Indeed, in the last 10 shoots, he said, the new champion had dropped only three points in 800, which was a remarkable performance. The president said that in addition to being the best shot in the club. Mr Macdonnell earned the highest esteem of his fellow members by being a very energetic secretary, a tireless worker for the club, and the most popular man in it. He gave great assistance to Mr Smyth as joint secretary before his transfer to Dunedin, when Mr Macdonnell took over the whole of the secretarial duties and kept the club going. In winning the cup, which was to be held for one year, the new champion also received a handsome cutglass cruet set, which was given as a souvenir of the occasion. He also won during the season a clock presented by a club member, Mr L. Brash. Mr J. H. Mills’s trophy, a pair of ebony-backed hair brushes in case, went to Mr John McCully, Scotts Gap. This trophy was given for handicap competition among members of the club who came in from the country to shoot. The B grade championship cup was presented to Mr L. Thwaites. Mr R. Broomfield proposed the toast of those who had given trophies. Mr Broomfield commented on the satisfaction he received from shooting, and thanked those who had assisted to keep the club interest high by presenting prizes for competition. The toast, which was accorded musical honours, was responded to by Messrs J. H. Mills and L. Brash.
