RECAPTURE OF LODZ BY POLES

Change Of Weather In Poland Reported

ROADS ALREADY RUINED BY GERMAN TANKS

(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 13, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, September 13.

The Times publishes a report that the Poles have recaptured Lodz. It also stated that a Polish army of 250,000 men retreating from Pomorze had established contact with Polish troops near Warsaw. The report added that the dry autumn weather had changed and rain had fallen. The roads were already ruined by the advances of German tanks and air bombing was becoming impossible. A Warsaw communique states that the Polish Posnanian army has recaptured Lodz. The Warsaw station announced that nine German divisions had been diverted from Warsaw to the Vistula and Western European fronts. “The invaders are now definitely on the run,” the station states.

The Mayor of Warsaw (M. Starzynski) appealed by radio to youths to enlist in what may become a suicide battaxon to defend the city. He warned youths not to volunteer unless they were resigned to fight to the last as “Warsaw will be defended to the last man.” The Polish Commander sent a radio message stating that women were fighting alongside the men, showing great courage.

A Belgian balloonist, M. de Muyter, who has returned from Lwow, is of the opinion that if Poland receives effective tangible help in the course of the coming weeks she will be able to resist the aggressors for a long time on the reduced front. The Polish troops and civil population have shown wonderful courage and energy.
