ROWING
ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION SATISFACTORY SEASON REVIEWED The season generally had been quite satisfactory, remarked the president (Mr A. E. Budd) at the annual meeting of the Southland Rowing Association last night, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet. Because of the efforts of the Invercargill Club, another regatta had been held during the season. The , association had received no revenue from this fixture, but it had doubtlessly benefited in other respects. Because of the absence in England of the auditor (Mr R. N. Todd) the balance-sheet had not been audited, and he moved its adoption subject to audit at a later date. Mr Budd was chairman and there was a good attendance of delegates. The annual report stated that the season had been a successful one and that all business had been transacted satisfactorily. In view of the fact that the association had nothing to do with the regatta at Dunn’s Road, and so received no funds from this source, and considering that it had the expense of sending the Southland eight to Dunedin on two occasions, it was pleasing that there was still a small sum in the bank, although an account for a similar amount had yet to be paid. The amount of £l2/12/- was collected from the four clubs for affiliation fees. There was a balance of £5/4/5 in the Invercargill Savings Bank, but this was offset by an amount for £3/14/-. “Although at one part of the season it was thought that the association’s eight and oars would have to be housed in some place other than the Railway Club’s shed, it is with sincere gratitude that the association expresses its thanks to this club for the housing of the plant during the season,” the report stated. “Before the New Zealand interprovincial championships at Easter an unfortunate accident caused the eight to be badly opened in the bottom while on the estuary at Invercargill. We thank the Otago Association for the use of its boat at Dunedin.
REPRESENTATIVE ROWING “Southland was represented by a different crew in the New Zealand eightoared championship and Edmund Shield races, and both crews performed well and gained much valuable experience in eight-oared rowing. “The Awarua and Railway clubs again secured the greater part of the prize money offered between them, and both these clubs put up splendid performances at the various regattas. Although the Riverton Club did not receive as much prize-money, its members gave some good performances on the water. Invercargill did not appear on the water at the beginning of the season but towards the' latter part appeared to be moulding itself into a strong club again.”
The financial statement showed a credit balance of £5/4/5.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The following officers were elected: President, Mr A. E. Budd (re-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs M. C. Officer (senior), J. Frew and J. B. Pasco; certifying council, Messrs J. Frew, C. S. Hunter and J. B. Pasco; regatta representatives, Messrs A. E. Budd (Invercargill and Riverton) and J. B. Pasco (Bluff); auditor, Mr H. R. Wilcox; selectors, Messrs A. E. Budd, S. Adamson and J. Frew; emergency committee, Messrs Budd, J. B. Pasco and the secretary; delegate to New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association, Mr A. G. Cockroft.
The appointment of a secretary and signing officers was deferred till a later date. OVERSEAS CREWS’ VISIT The New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association wrote stating that the council had received from the Wellington Association a suggestion that an American University crew be invited to compete at Centennial regattas during the coming season, the itinerary to coincide as far as possible with that of the Australian crew if the latter competed. The views of the Southland Association on the proposal were asked.
It was decided that the matter be left to the discretion of the delegate to the New Zealand Association, Mr Cockroft.
After a long discussion on what should be done with the two pairs boats received from the Picton Association it was decided that one be given to the Invercargill Club; the disposal of the other was left over until the committees of the Riverton and Railway clubs had reported to the association, stating their claims. Mr J. B. Pasco was appointed the association’s delegate to a meeting of representatives of sports bodies which will be held on September 'lB.
A vote of thanks to Messrs V. Clark and E. Millard for their repairs to the Southland eight-oared boat was carried.
