PASSENGER RATES INCREASED

ACTION TAKEN BY SHIPPING COMPANIES (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 12. Suez, Panama and Cape steam ship lines announce a surcharge of 33 1-3 per cent, to be added forthwith to all passenger rates. The issue of all return tickets is to be discontinued. RUSH OF ALIENS TO REGISTER WELLINGTON, September 12. Since the regulations were announced a little mere than a week ago there has been a constant stream of aliens from a bewildering assortment of countries applying for registration at the central police station So large is the rush that at times as many as 10 officers have been employed trying to cope with it. WELSH GUARDS BAND NOT TO VISIT N.Z. WELLINGTON, September 12. The Welsh Guards band will not now be coming to play at the Centennial Exhibition. The general manager of the exhibition (Mr C. P. Hainsworth) said today that information to this effect had been received by cablegram from London. As soon as war was declared, it was considered highly improbable that the Welsh Guards Band would be permitted to visit New Zealand. None the less, it is a great disappointment to the exhibition management. A meeting of the music committee has been convened to consider a suitable alternative. It is considered that the next best thing is to encourage local talent and to seek some method whereby the best available New Zealand bands will be able to participate in the exhibition. The scheme that will probably be adopted, therefore, will be that the best bands throughout the Dominion will be invited to play at the exhibition at various times and on special occasions. Several outstanding bands are to be approached. NO AMMUNITION FOR RIFLE CLUBS WELLINGTON. September 12. The announcement that in a day or two all rifle clubs affiliated to the National Rifle Association would be advised that no ammunition would be sold to them until further notice was made by Mr W. Mcßain, chairman of the executive of the national body at at annual meeting of the Wellington Rifle Association tonight. Mr Mcßain said rifles and rifle barrels would also be unprocurable until further notice. The chairman (Mr S. F McLean) said he was unable to find whether the Trentham range would be available this year.
