MEAT PRODUCERS’ DIFFERENCES

NEGOTIATIONS AMONG SECTIONS COMBINED CONFERENCE POSTPONED Negotiations for a conference between representatives of the Southland provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union and the Southland Primary Producers’ Association to settle differences of opinion on freezing facilities in the province have not so far been successful. A report on the latest developments was made at the meeting of the Farmers’ Union executive yesterday by the president (Mr E. A. Cameron). A letter from the secretary of the association (Mr A. Napper) stated that the association was willing to meet representatives of the Farmers’ Union executive at a round-table conference as suggested recently. The association would appoint 13 representatives to meet a similar number of representatives of the Farmers’ Union in conference. Mr Cameron said Mr Napper’s letter had been forwarded to him, but he did not receive it until after his return from the Dominion conference a fortnight later. He then thought it advisable to wait for a copy of the order paper for yesterday’s meeting before. he communicated with the association. He telephoned the president (Mr J. Cowie) and told him that the executive would be prepared to receive a delegation at 3 o’clock, but he could not guarantee that 13 members would be present to receive it. If the association was proposing to put forward a remit it would be opening up entirely new matter from what had been originally suggested. He had asked who, was to preside at the conference and if the association wished to suggest a chairman. If the association submitted a remit for a new freezing licence for Southland and it was lost, would the association be prepared to abide by the decision, he had asked. Mr Cowie had not answered the question. He had later received advice that a delegation would not attend .the meeting, - — - ,
