DRAUGHTS

CONDUCTED BY F. HUTCHINS Champion of Southland "Let science give release, To tninds o’er wrought by care and thought. Let the checker board be brought. The battlefield of peace.”

All communications to be addressed to “Draughts Editor,” 54 Biggar street. Solutions of problems, games, criticisms, and analysis are invited. Draughts Club meets every Saturday at 7.30 p.m. in room at Everybody’s, Tay street. PROBLEMS Problem No. 1102 By H. TONKIN Black

White Black.—3, 9, 10, 11, 16. White.—2o, 23, 26, 27; King, 18. Black to play and win. Problem No. 1103 By Dr. T. J. BROWN Black

White Black—B. 19, 22. 23, 24, 27, 28. White—9, 10, 14, 15, 18. 21, 25, 29, 30. Black to play and draw. This remarkable curiosity was given <n The Draughts Board, 1870. The Black pieces get to safety, and then swing 28.32 and 32.28—London Free Press, Canada. SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES These two games were played in the recent tourney etween last years champion, J. Mclntosh and the present holder of the title. They will be found worthy of perusal, more especially the peculiar development in the second game. GAME 1422 "Denny”

Southland Times Notes. (a) 11.15 is a good alternative. 7.10 gives White the better game. (b) The usual, playing for a centre. (c) 11.15 is also good. (d) 12.16 is favoured by some experts. (e) A natural reply, though 29.25 or 26.22 are equally good. (f) 18.15, 1.6, 15.11. 14.18, 23.14, 16.23«, 27.18, 10.17, and so on leads to an interesting finish. * The take 9.18 allows a White win. (g) 9.13 is also sound for a draw. (h) Forcing the exchange and leading to a clear cut draw. All Book. GAME 1423 Black, Hutchins. White, Mclntosh.

25.22-c 32.28 31.22 20. 2 (a) 22.18 is more usual. Text is tricky and has to be carefully handled. (b) Given as weak and once considered a loss but "Master Play” shows a narrow draw. (c) This move lessens White's advantage. 26.22 is better—26.22, 8.11, 22.17, 3.8 and so on draws. (d) 7.11 is perhaps preferable. (e) "Master Play” gives 3.8 here. (f) The position here is most interesting, see diagram. Black

White Black to play. Can any of our students show a win? (g) 18.23. 27.9, 7.14 would probably make an easier draw. PROBLEM SOLUTIONS Problem No. 1102 By H. TONKIN Black.—3. 9. 10. 11, 16. White—2o, 23, 26, 27; King, 18. Black to play and win. 9.14, 18.9, 11.15, 20.11, 10.14, 9.18, 15.31, Black wins. Problem No. 1103 By Dr. T. J. BROWN Black.—B. 19, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28. THE INVERCARGILL DRAUGHTS CLUB Owing to the date being changed for the Ranfurly Shield match the social evening arranged for last Saturday in the Invercargill Draughts Club was postponed and will be held this evening. Tire same invitation is extended to all players to oe present especially those who may be visiting the town from other parts. OTAGO V. SOUTHLAND MATCH The date of the above match has been postponed due to the alteration of the return football match between Otago and Southland. A decision will be arrived at this evening and players will be advised later regarding the holding of this contest between the two provinces. DRAUGHTS BOOMING From our latest exchanges we gather ample evidence that our game is in a flourishing condition in our sister state— Tasmania; many matches are being played and in at least three cases there have been about 60 players competing. At one of these matches Burnie v. Ulverstone, the president of the Tasmanian Draughts Association, Mr Mervyn Rockiiff mentioned how the game was booming in all parts of the country and that he was just begining to reap the harvest of a lot of hard work he had put into draughts on the Coast. TO CORRESPONDENTS C. Roni. (London, Canada). Your budget of problems, games and so on were much appreciated. Many thanks. G. Moodie (Tasmania). Your interesting budget to hand and thank you. croTT CUP TOURNEY AND SOUTHLAND CHAMPIONSHIP 1939 Play has now been concluded, and the result is a narrow win for Mr F. Hutchins from Mr J.
