INSPECTION OF RAMS A. AND P. ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS REMIT A decision to support the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association s remjt. about the inspection of rams at ram fairs, provided breeders were given the right to appeal for an explanation why their sheep had been rejected was made by the executive of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association at its meeting yesterday. The remit which was forwarded by the secretary of the Timaru Association
“That rams which have been subjected to an inspection at ram fairs by an authorized inspector of a breed society and which have been rejected because they possess faults undesirable in sires should be either destroyed or rendered useless for breeding purposes.” . , , x , Mr J. A. Edwards said that the remit had been approved at the annual conference of the Royal Agricultural Society. He considered, however, that breeders should have the right of appeal about why their sheep had been rejected. At the Timaru fair several rams had been rejected, which, in the opinion of a number of breeders, were quite sound. The inspectors rulings had been hard to follow. He agreed with the principle of the remit if the proposal were adhered to in a proper maimer. Mr J. Burnett expressed the opinion that it was a matter for breed societies to decide whether or not a sheep should be rejected. That the ideal was all right but that the whole thing was a farce, was the opinion expressed "by Mr H. P. McIntyre, who pointed out that rams were rejected at one fair and were disposed of at another fair. Mr Burnett said that it was better to put the onus on the buyer, who knew what he wanted. He moved that no action be taken. The motion was seconded by Mr McIntyre. “I consider that something should be
done to encourage breeders to improve their stock,” said Mr Edwards, who moved an amendment that the society support the proposal with the addition that breeders should have the right of appeal for an explanation why their sheep had been rejected. The amendment was seconded by Mr A. Orr and was carried. PERSONAL Messrs G. Smith and J. White were elected life members of the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association at yesterday’s meeting of the executive of the association. Mr F. F. Trapski was reappointed the Gore Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s representative on the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association at yesterday’s meeting of the executive of the association.
