The members of the Young Ladies’ Guild of the Riverton Presbyterian Church held a successful bring-and-buy sale in the Sunday school hall, approximately £25 being raised. Macfarlane' i who expressed thanks to the stall holders for their assistance. 'Hie stall holders were: Work stall, Misses L. Helm and E. Tweedie; cake stall, Miss | V. Cassels; produce stall, Miss I. Arm- ■ strong; tea rooms, Misses Mary Robert- I son, M. Galloway, B. McNaughton, J. Robertson, P. Bailey and M. Simpson. CARD TOURNAMENT There was a good attendance at the weekly card tournament in aid of the funds of the Aparima Returned Soldiers’ Bowling Club. First prize in the women’s section was won by Miss L. Byrne, with Mrs Spencer, sen., second. In the men’s section Mr J. Stirling was first and Mr R. Tweedie second. IMPROVEMENTS TO BOWLING GREEN The . Aparima Returned Soldiers’ Bowling Club’s green, which has recently been top-dressed, will probably have a much-improved surface next season. Formerly one corner was two inches off the level, but top-dressing has reduced the slope to one inch. Already the grass is more than an inch long and if the present rate of growth continues there should be a good sole of grass on the green before the playing season begins. It is expected that with more dressings the surface, of the green will be level next year. OLD COIN UNEARTHED A Riverton resident made an interesting discovery last week when he was renewing an old grating at his home. In some gfavel he unearthed a battered-looking coin which proved to be a sixpence minted in 1819, the date being clearly visible. On one side was an engraving of the head of King George 111, with the inscription: “Britt. Rex, D.G.F.D.,” which was very faint. The obverse side appeared to have suffered more from the weather, but a cbat-of-arms surmounted by a crown could be seen quite clearly. SNOW ON THE LONGWOODS The Longwood hills had their first coating of snow on a cold night last week, when the temperature was very low in Riverton. Since then the weather has remained , cold although the sun has shone brightly. WARDEN’S COURT / A sitting of the Warden’s Court, presided over by Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., was held at Riverton last week. John Herman Sorensen, Orepuki, applied for a water race licence for four heads to be diverted from Falls Creek and terminated at Orepuki Beach. Mr E.
