GLENHAM

BAIN FAMILY HONOURED There was a big gathering of Glenham and district settlers in the Glenham hall when a presentation was made to Mr and Mrs R. K. Bain and family, who after 27 years’ residence in the district are moving to Wyndham. During his residence in Glenham Mr Bain has occupied the position of surfaceman to the Southland County Council, and he has been transferred to Wyndham, where he will assume control of the WyndhamMokoreta highway, in place of Mr S. Ireland, who recently retired. He will also control part of the Glenham roads. The big gathering to bid them fare,well was evidence of the high esteem in which they were held. Music was supplied by Messrs W. Brown and G. McEwan, and at intervals items were given by Mesdames J. Robertson, W. Bennett and A. Henderson, Miss M. Frame, and the South Wyndham school mouth-organ band. Messrs R. Robinson and Ai Melvin were masters -of ceremonies.

Mr E. Rabbidge, who presided, asked Mr C. F. Hunter to make the presentation. Mr Hunter said he had known the guests ever since they came to the district. He referred to the good record they had built up in a community sense; they were always ready to help any cause for the betterment of the district and were generous subscribers to any list that went round. On behalf of the residents he asked them to accept a wood box, fire screen, kerb and fireside set complete as a token of the goodwill and esteem in which they were held. Mrs E. Rabbidge referred to the long time their guests had been in the district, and said that Mrs Bain had proved a helpful friend in times of sickness. Mr and Mrs Bain had joined in all the activities of the young people and had taken their part in promoting the welfare of the various sports bodies. On behalf of the women in the district she thanked them for all they had done for Glenham during their stay there. ' On behalf of■ the basketball' and tennis clubs, Mr S. Ferguson presented Miss Agnes Bain with a crystal bedroom clock. He said that she had proved a willing worker and always played the game. Master M. Thwaites presented Master A. Bain with a fountain pen from his school mates. Mr Bain expressed thanks for the gifts and the accompanying remarks. RIFLE CLUB There was a good attendance at the weekly shoot of the Glenham Rifle Club. Miss A. Bain won R. M. McKay and Company’s trophy for the .month of May. Following were the scores:-- . Men.—A. NATIONAL PARTY At the annual meeting of the Glenham branch of the National Party, Mr D. McKenzie presided over an attendance of 20 members. The election of office-bearers resulted: President, Mr D. McKenzie; secretary, Mr J. Howe; committee, Messrs N. McEwan, C. and T. Hunter, E. Rabbidge, W. Robinson, A. C. Bulling, J. Bruce, S. Walker, G. Officer and J. Robertson; delegates to Gore, president, secretary and Messrs C. Hunter and W. Robinson. Interesting addresses were given by Messrs T. L. Macdonald, M.P., and R. S. Green (Gore).
