MARKETING OF BUTTER
To The Editor
Sir,—For the first six weeks of this financial year our Government apparently attempted to peg the price of butter at approximately 114/- per cwt on the English market. Sales were very small and stocks . accumulated. While we were speculating for a rise Australia met the market, sold freely at a slightly lower price and got nd of practically all her stocks before the price slumped to 105/-. These are the comparative figure's for tons of butter in store:— „ . April 1 May 19 New Zealand 5492 ' 6335 Australia ' 4000 1424 This is only one example of the ineptitude of Government control. The farmer, of course, gets his guaranteed price, but the loss falls on the Dominion just the same. The housewife contributes her share in the price she pays here. Would she not relish the opportunity of buying her butter at the same price as the English housewife —1/1 per Tb?—Yours, etc., SCRUTATOR. June 7, 1939.-
