BUSHCRAFT CARNIVAL ON MONDAY

SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS The chopping and sawing championships of Otago and Southland which are to be held at the Civic Theatre on Monday night by the Invercargill Caledonian Society are expected to attract a big crowd. Twenty-four bushcraft events are to be included in the programme and, with champion axemen competing, there should not be a dull moment in the two hours and a-half of entertainment. Cyril Hayes, of Owaka, is in good form and will again keep his opponents busy. He will, however, be pushed all the way by such men as J. Pont, M. Callaghan, Charles Harding, Poultney, Lee and Swale. Pont is still a brilliant axeman and, should he lower the colours of the champion, his win would be a popular one. The sawyers are the best in the two provinces today and quite up to New Zealand’s highest standard. In this section the public is going to see some fast cutting. The Fraser brothers, who have won a world’s championship, are sure to be well tried by such pairs as Manson and Thomas, Waldron and Mackintosh, and the Middleton brothers. The New Zealand champion dancer, Miss Norma Marshall, of Dunedin, has been specially engaged to perform and she will be supported by the pupils of Madame May Thorn in spectacular reel dancing. The box plans are open at Begg’s and booking is free.
