CHARGES AGAINST TWO MEN
MAN SENT TO PRISON FOR THEFT OF UNION FUNDS (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26. Arrested this morning after a city building had been surrounded by the police, Charles Raoul Francis Gawn, aged 20, a messenger, and Gordon Thomas Wilkie, aged 40, a mechanic, were charged before the Magistrate (Mr J. H. Luxford) with breaking and entering the warehouse of Winstones Ltd., Ghuznee street, with intent to commit theft. Wilkie was stated to have been found on the rpof and the other concealed in a box in the yard.
The accused were remanded for a week for further inquiries and bail was refused. A term of -hree months’ hard labour was imposed on Rupert John Ashmond for the theft of union funds totalling £22/5/-. Mr Luxford commented on the meanness of the theft and said it was impossible to extend probation in view of the man’s record over 10 years, showing he seemed to have a complete disregard for the property of others. He had been given an opportunity of making good without prosecution, and could reasonably have done so. and must take the consequences. The theft was from workmen on the Whirokino deviation job
