BUSHCRAFT CARNIVAL ON MONDAY
CHAMPION AXEMEN TO COMPETE Preparations are well in hand for the chopping and sawing championships of Otago and Southland which are to be held at the Civic Theatre on Monday night. The Invercargill Caledonian Society is bringing together all the best men in Southland to oppose the champions of Otago. Cyril Hayes, of Owaka, the present title-holder, is in good form and will again keep his opponents busy He will, however, be pushed all the way by such men as J. Pont. M Callaghan. Charles Harding, Poultney, Lee and Swale. Pont is still a brilliant axeman and, should he lower the colours of the champion, his win would be a popular one. The sawyers are the best in the two provinces today and quite up to New Zealand’s highest standard. In this section the public is going to see some fast cutting. The Fraser brothers who have won a world’s championship, are sure to be well tried by such pairs as Manson and Thomas, Waldron and Mackintosh, and the Middleton brothers. The 24 bushcraft events on the programme will be run strictly to a time schedule and there should not be one dull moment in the two hours and a-half entertainment. Miss Norma Marshall, of Dunedin, the New Zealand champion dancer, has been specially engaged to perform’ and will appear in the early part of the programme. She will be supported by the pupils of Madame May Thorn in spectacular reel dancing. The box plans are now open at Begg’s, with free booking.
