REPORT OF JAPANESE DEBACLE

CHINESE CLAIM DEFEAT OF ENCIRCLING MOVE CHUNGKING, May 19. The Chinese, counter-attacking in northern Hupeh, slaughtered 18,000 Japanese and defeated the encircling movement at Tangho, where two Japanese columns had made a junction earlier and became isolated from the main body. The Japanese are retreating southwards through the Tahung mountains towards Tsayang and are conducting a running fight with their pursuers. The Japanese claim that they have cleared northern Hupeh and southern Honan of Chinese troops, says a report from Tokyo.
