CZECH GOLD SENT BACK TO NAZIS?
MR CHAMBERLAIN DENIES REPORT (Independent Cable Service) (Received May 20, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 19. The Financial News says it is reported that Germany has obtained control of £6,000,000 worth of Czech gold held in London. It is believed that this sum represents that portion of the former Czechoslovak National Bank’s gold which is held in London in the name of the Bank of International Settlements. It was found that the gold held by, the Bank of International Settlements could not be brought within the scope of the Act blocking Czech assets in London. In the House of Commons the Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) denied that the British Government had sanctioned the partial return of the Czechoslovak assets held in London. He said the whole story that £6,000,000 had been handed to Germany with the Treasury’s consent, as quoted- by Mr David Lloyd George, was a “mare’s nest.” Any release made was in small amounts to refugees, the Prime Minister said.
