ANZAC DAY IN INVERCARGILL
“SOLEMNITY BEING LOST”
That he felt they were losing their grip on Anzac Day was a remark made by Mr R. Goold at the annual meeting of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association in Smith’s Hall on Saturday night. “If it were not for the help given by the Press Anzac Day would be ; almost forgotten,” said Mr Goold. “I am sorry that this is the position, but that is how it appears to me. I think we should go back to the solemnity of the day, and I would refer this to the incoming committee for consideration. We should go back to the system whereby returned soldiers are regarded not as forgotten men, but as men to be remembered.”
Last Anzac Day there was an advertisement in the papers that practically invited the public to spend Anzac Day on holiday. That the occasion should be made a glorified holiday was not right. The president, Mr H. C. Mackenzie, emphasized that they were not losing their grip on Anzac Day and in support of this he referred to the bigger parades and bigger attendances of the public during the last two years.
