TWO SOUTHLAND SUCCESSES
Foxlove Chief Winner At Riccarton
WAITORU BEATS BIG FIELD (Special to The Tinies) CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. There were only four starters for the Longbeach hurdles and the outsider Survoy won decisively. Jewish Lad and Dracula raced abreast in front to the second hurdle where Jewish Lad faltered and Dracula opened up a big gap to Jewish Lad, going into the back stretch with Survoy and Dividend well back. Jewish Lad gradually retired and Survoy ran into second place. - The latter drew up to Dracula turning for home and the pair took the last fence together but Dracula blundered and fell, leaving Survoy to carry on for an easy victory, from Dividend with Jewish Lad tailing off. Dracula, who was beaten when he fell, broke a leg and was destroyed. REBELLION’S SUCCESS
Rebellion was responsible for an outstanding effort to win the Eiffelton Hack Handicap. He only had one horse behind him with three furlongs covered and only started to make up ee ) l, ' a y when the course proper was reached. Phenomenal was the early leader and he piloted Miss Tasta, Tantivy, Asset, Philbun, Real Lady and The Wrecker to the straight. Phenomenal held all of these off until Rebellion put in an appearance on the outside of the bunch. In a great race home Rebellion got up right on the post to win by half a head from Phenomenal, with Real Lady a close third, a head in front of The Wrecker, with another head to Tantivy and Nolana. . . Erin’s Lad led into the straight in the Selma Trot from Sunworthy, Willa, Rosalind Maid and Durability, with Wainoni Girl and Royal Surprise handy. Sunworthy had charge at the distance but Wainoni Girl, 'well handled by the veteran, F. Holmes, wore him and won by a narrow margin. Royal Surprise was a close third in front of Erin’s Lad. WAITORU’S CUP
The Ashburton Cup prodded a spectacular race and a close finish. Nightdress and Night Hawk were the early leaders and Wild Chase, Mungatoon and Milford were slowest away.. Passing the mile post Glenogil joined Night Hawk in front and the pair carried on from Foxlove, Haughty Winner, Nightdress, Wild Chase, Parquet, Dictate and Rabble. There was not much change when the straight entrance was reached except that Milford had moved up but Glenogil soon dropped out in the run home and Night Hawk was left with a useful lead from Foxlove, Nightdress, Dictate and Parquet. All of these had closed on Night Hawk 100 yards from the post and then Foxlove began to draw out and finishing resolutely, got up to win narrowly from Parquet, who came with a late run to separate Foxlove and Dictate on the post. Night Hawk was only a head away and was closely followed by Mungatoon, Night.dress, Wine Card, Rabble, Settlement, Haughty Winner, Queen of Song, Glenogil, Milford and Wild Chase in that order. SUPPORT JUSTIFIED Pink Dress justified her strong support in the Trial Stakes by an impressive but narrow win. Stylist was first to enter the course proper from Pink Dress and Blue Coat and with a furlong to go Pink Dress challenged Stylist and after a prolonged struggle Pink Dress got in the deciding stride. Palastyle came from well back to get up for third money from Blue Coat with Trumpeter Sound, Jumeaux, Ravine and Swingtime next. Palastyle was disqualified for his third placing because of winning races at non-totalizator meetings and thus being ineligible to compete in this race. WAITORU’S GOOD WIN The biggest galloping field of the day paraded for the Fairfield Hack Handicap and another close tussle over the final stages was staged. Garonne was first out from Maroha, Shangri La, Wardress, Waitoru and Skyrena. The lastnamed ran into second place to Garonne rounding the top and followed Garonne into the straight with Waitoru, Shanghai Lily, Elmarch and Wardress handy. Garonne was overhauled by Waitoru a furlong from home and the latter appeared to have the race well in hand until Wardress, who had an interrupted passage home, tackled him nearing the post. Wardress was catching Waitoru but just failed to get up. Skyrena was a close third a head in front of Elmarch, who was practically in line with Garonne and Shanghai Lily. Special Edition was not troubled in the Rakaia Trot Handicap once he took charge at the half-mile and he won pulling up from Great Blaze, who outstayed Manpower. The last-named failed to go off correctly and was well in the rear for the first few furlongs. ROY BUN’S SPRINT The Flying Handicap resulted in another exciting finish, .three horses crossing the line locked together. Nightcalm and Lady Leigh disputed the lead in the early stages and entered the straight abreast from Thermidor, Paper Slipper and Land Raid, with Roy Bun and Waitaka handy. Nightcalm and Lady Leigh were fighting out a hard tussle when Roy Bun joined them and the last named got up in the last stride to beat Nightcalm by a head with a similar margin to Lady Leigh. Paper Slipper was two lengths away, a head in front of Land Raid, with another gap to Thermidor and Waitaka. REHANDICAPS FOR MANAWATU (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 14.
