MACKENZIE SHIELD MATCH WIN FOR INVERCARGILL A Nine teams from five Southland rifle clubs competed at the Otatara range on Saturday for the Mackenzie Shield and Country Clubs’ Cups, presented by H. Mackenzie and Sons. Conditions for shooting were good. _A gusty erly wind and variable light kept both coaches and riflemen on their mettle throughout the match. The Mackenzie Shield was won by the Invercargill A team, captained and coached by the veteran rifleman, A. R. Wills. Gore A. took second place and won the Country Clubs’ Cup. , At the completion of the 300 yards range Invercargill was leading with a score of 165 points, closely followed by Gore A 164, City Guards A filling third position with 163. Shooting brilliantly at 500 yards the Invercargill A team dropped only 5 points to score 170, bringing its total to 335. Gore A shot steadily and scored 165 for an aggregate of 329 and City Guards A scored 162 to bring its total to 325. Going down at 600 yards with a lead of six points on Gore A, the Invercargill team shot steadily for a scor ® of 154 points and an aggregate of 489. Gore A made a great effort to win at this range, scoring 158 points and reducing the lead of Invercargill to two points. With an aggregate of 485 Gore A took second place. City Guards with an excellent range score of 160 brought its total to 485 and filled third place. _ At the end of the meeting, Mr C. M. Wilson, president of the Southland Rifle Association, presented the trophies to the winning teams. Messrs A. R. Wills, H. Mackenzie and W. D. Milne replied on behalf of the teams. The fixture was excellently conducted, being under the control of Mr A. Lyall and Mr W. McChesney, the competitors giving three cheers for the range officers at the presentation of prizes.
