TRADES UNIONS AND CONSCRIPTION
EFFECT ON INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES (British Official Wireless) (Received May 13, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, May 12. In the House of Commons during consideration in committee of the Compulsory Military Training Biil the Secretary for War (Mr L. HoreBelisha) in reply to Opposition speeches expressing anxiety about the effects of conscription on civil and trade disputes, gave an assurance on behalf of the Government that it was prepared to give each militiaman a written statement that any liability he might be presumed to be under during his service would not be enforced in his case. A resolution in favour of compulsory military service was carried by a large majority at a conference of the Liberal Party today. MOVE FOR CONSCRIPTION IN EVENT OF WAR

A motion has been tabled requesting the State Council to introduce conscription immediately to enable Ceylon to defend itself in the event of war.
