PIHA FIRE CASE TODAY
ABOUT 40 WITNESSES TO BE HEARD
OPENING OF LOWER COURT PROCEEDINGS (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17. About 40 witnesses, whose evidence will mean the production of 100 exhibits, will be heard in the Lower Court proceedings of the Piha fire mystery case, which opens tomorrow morning. It is, expected to last two full days, possibly more. Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., will be on the Bench. The two accused are Gordon Robert McKay, a wool and skin dealer, aged 43, and James Arthur Talbot, aged 38, both of Australia. They are jointly charged with improperly interfering with a dead human body, that of Patrick Henry Shine, at Auckland on February 10 and with wilfully setting fire to the dwelling-house of Frank Carew-Thomas, thereby committing arson, at Piha on February 12. Detective-Sergeant W. L. Alford, who has charge of the detective staff at Newcastle, New South Wales, arrived by the Aorangi today to give evidence in the case.
