ACCOMMODATION ON MATSON LINERS
COMPLAINTS BY CREWS
(United Press Association)
AUCKLAND, April 17.
According to members of the crew of the Matson liner Monterey, which arrived today, three days behind her normal schedule, the delay resulted from their declaring “black” three Matson ships, including the Monterey, because in their opinion the accommodation was poor and uncomfortable, particularly when they were passing through the tropics. It was stated that representations had previously been made to the company and that when the Monterey arrived at San Francisco on the last trip north, the crews of the three vessels decided not to sail unless something were done to improve the sleeping quarters.
Ultimately a Government official from Washington was called in to arbitrate and the crews eventually sailed on the understanding, it is said, that the arbitrator’s decision would be made soon.
