NEW ZEALAND ALPINE CLUB

SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT OF SOUTHLAND SECTION The informative and interesting lectures given to members of the Southland section of the New Zealand Alpine Club during the year are mentioned in the seventh annual report of the section. The lectures were as follows:—“The Spencer from the Franz Josef” by Mr D. A. Carty, “Mt. Underwood” by Mr L. Stewart, “GraveTalbot” by Dr. D. R. Jennings, “A Reconnaissance in Falls Creek” by Mr R. Ferris, “An Attempt on Mt. Browning” by Mr H. Strang. A lecture by Mr L. V. Bryant was also enthusiastically received. The report states that the balancesheet shows the finances to be in a very good position although several donations were made during the year. The annual dinner, held on September 3, was a great success, a big contingent of Otago members being present. A favourable reply was received from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) and the Minister of Lands (the Hon. F. Langstone) to the section’s request for the opening up of the Tutoko river and lower Hollyford valleys, stated .the report.
