SOUTHERN SOUTHLAND FEDERATION

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The executive committee of the Southern Southland Federation of Women’s Institutes met in the Rosewood Lounge, Mrs Ramsay (president) presiding over the following members: Mesdames Bowman, F. Clapp, Earle Kennedy (secretary), M. Elliott, D. Mulvey and C. Leith. Arrangements were made for the annual council meeting to be held at the Rosewood on April 21, when Mrs Elsie Freeman, of Wellington, will address the meeting on world affairs.

The date for the annual drama festival, which is to be held at Waianiwa this year, was decided as Wednesday, June 7. Mrs F. Clapp, the Southern Southland representative on the Dominion council brought back a very full report of the meeting in Wellington. Mrs Ramsay, Mrs Bowman and Mrs .Mulvey were appointed voluntary organizers for the coming year. Mrs Soper, of Wairio, was appointed convener for the western group o' institutes. THE LIMEHILLS BODY The annual meeting of the Limehills Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall. There was a good attendance of members. The motto was: “One volunteer is worth two pressed men,” and the roll call, “The furthest I have been and what I saw.” Invitations were received to Longbush and Spar Bush birthday parties. Mrs H. Doherty presented the annual report and Mrs Watson the balancesheet. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs W. Woods; vice-presidents, Mesdames Nicoll and Morgan and Miss Lepper; secretary, Mrs H. Doherty: treasurer, Mrs Watson; Press correspondent, Miss Lepper; link secretary, Mrs Morgan; competition secretary, Mrs E. J. Crowe; social committee, Mesdames Scrimgour, Kettle, Payne, ' Pemberton, Watson, Morgan and Misses Harper and Lepper; drama circle, Mesdames Watson, Morgan, R. Wood and Misses Harper,

Kettle and Lepper. It was decided to place a wreath on the memorial on Anzac Day. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Pemberton and Miss N. Wilson. CLIFTON At the annual meeting of the Clifton Women’s Institute Mrs Mulvey presided over 14 members. Two new members were welcomed and two resignations received with regret. Mrs Ramsay conducted the meeting and gave a talk on the Women’s Institute movement. Mrs Mulvey was re-elected president and Mrs Reinke

secretary. Competitions resulted as follows: Best article from two skeins three-ply wool, Mrs McDermott 1, Mrs Hesselyn 2, Mrs Jordan 3. Best bloom, Mrs Ross 1, Mrs McDermott 2, Mrs Dale 3. Best posy, Mrs McDermott 1, Mrs Reinke 2, Mrs Boyd 3. WOODEND The annual meeting of the Woodend Women’s Institute was held in the hall. Mrs Shepherd presided over a fair attendance. The motto was: “A friend is one who knows all about you and loves you just the same,” and the roll call “Funny experiences.” Competitions resulted: Peeling a potato blindfold, Mrs Robertson 1, Mrs Shepherd 2, Mrs Lilley 3. Blooms Mrs Jordan 1, Mrs McCallum 2, Mrs Shepherd 3. Mesdames Jennings and Jordan were appointed delegates to the council meeting. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Shepherd; secretary, Mrs Leith; treasurer, Mrs Jennings; committee, Mesdames McCallum, Lalley, Saunders, Jordan and Miss Robertson; secretary Home and Country, Mrs V. Jordan; competition secretary and Press correspondent, Mrs V. Jordan. OREPUKI Mrs Bowman, federation V. 0., presided at the annual meeting of the Orepuki Women’s Institute. The annual report and balance-sheet were presented and adopted. Mrs Bowman gave an address on institute work. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Fraser; vicepresidents, Mesdames Morris and Whipp; joint secretaries, Mrs Clifford and Miss Hurst; trustee, Mrs Weir; (

committee, Mesdames Buckingham and R. Hogg. It was decided to hold the monthly meetings on the third Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. Points competition: Jam jar of flowers, Miss Hurst 1, Mrs Weir 2, Miss N. Goold 3. Bloom competition, Mrs F. Hogg and Mrs Garden 1 eq.; Mrs Weir 2, Miss N. Goold 3. The roll call was “My worst fright.” NIAGARA At the annual meeting of the Niagara Women’s Institute members bad farewell to the president, Mrs Ramsay.

The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. Two delegates were chosen to attend the annual council meeting. The election of the committee resulted as follows: President, Mrs Ashmore; vice-president, Mrs Cook; secretary, Mrs Olssen; Press correspondent, liss H. McColgan; committee, the above officers and Mrs Marshall. Mrs Ashmore, on behalf of the members, presented Mrs Ramsay with a parting gift and wished her success in the future. Mrs Ramsay replied, stating that her happiest memories of her stay in Niagara would be with the institute. RIVERTON Mrs J. W. Martin presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute. A welcome was extended to a party of members from Ohai which had accompanied Mrs Reid, who came to give a demonstration on stool seating. Three new members were also welcomed.

The motto was: “A word to you and a word to me and a helping hand where need may be.” and the roll call, “A useful hint.”

Mrs Reid gave a demonstration on' the seating of a seagrass stool and was accorded a vote of thanks by Mrs A. R. Mann.

Competitions resulted as follows:— Article made from one skein of wool: Mrs Latchford 1, Mrs Boniface 2, Mrs Harvey 3. Best bloom: Mrs J. W. Martin 1, Mesdames F. Latchford and P. W. Keeler 2 eq, Mrs J. Fitzpatrick and Mrs Harvey 3 eq. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Fitzpatrick, F. A. Webb and P. W. Keeler. WAIRIO Mrs Soper presided over a fair' attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute. The roll call was: “Nursery rhymes.” The Rev. E. B. Stevenson gave a talk on the growing and care of gladioli. Competitions resulted: An unusual jam, Mrs Withers 1, Mrs Gunn 2, Mrs Cutt 3. Best bloom, Miss Keen 1, Mrs Soper 2, Miss Ford 3. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs Sherman and Miss Sherman. NIGHTCAPS The annual meeting of the Nightcaps Women’s Institute was held in the schoolroom, Mrs A. Y. Cook presiding over 14 members. j The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Mcßae; secretary, Mrs Pointon. Mrs Cook, the retiring secretary, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her work for the institute over a period I of six years. Competitions resulted: Bloom, Mrs McKenzie 1, Mrs White 2, Mrs Dixon and Mrs Pointon 3 eq. A small gift was made to Mrs Pope, who had supplied hot water for the supper during the year, and a gift was also made to Mrs Pointon for the use of her room for committee meetings. An apology was received from Mrs Ram- i say who was unable to attend because of illness. OHAI The annual meeting of the Ohai Women’s Institute was held in the supper room. Before opening the meeting, Mrs McNeilage asked members to stand for a minute in silence in sympathy with two of the members who had suffered bereavements. The roll call was: “Sing, say or one penny pay.” Two new members were enrolled. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. On retiring from the secretaryship Mrs McNeilage was presented with a crystal vase. Competitions resulted: Bloom competition, Mrs Mcßae 1, Mrs Jones 2, Mrs Kaye 3. The points competition for the year resulted as follows: Mrs McNeilage 1, Mrs Giles 2, Mrs Mclntosh 3, Mrs Mcßae 4. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs Bowman; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Gardner and Harding; secretary, Mrs Mcßae; treasurer, Mrs J. Mair; assistant secretary, Mrs McIntosh; competition secretary, Mrs D. Craig; Home and Country secretary, Mrs Newton. Hostesses for the evening were the retiring committee. LONG BUSH The annual meeting of the Long Bush Women’s Institute was held in the school, Mrs Browning presiding over a fair attendance.

The motto was: “Our best friends are

those who encourage us most,” and the roll call “The last straw.”

The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted and showed a satisfactory year’s work. Mrs Ramsay presided at the election of officers and gave an interesting talk on Women’s Institute work. At the close of her address she was presented with a bouquet All members extended their sympathy to Mrs Hughes in her illness.

Mesdames Browning and Froggatt were appointed delegates to the council meeting.

The election resulted: President, Mrs N. Hughes; vice-presidents, Mesdames G. Brown, Elliott, S. Brown and Miss O. Brown; secretary, Mrs G. Brown; treasurer, Mrs Froggatt; competition secretary, Mrs Browning; Press corres- . pondent, Mrs Timpany. Competitions resulted: Best-launder-ed shirt and stiff white collar, Mrs Browning 1, Miss O. Brown 2. Best collection of sandwiches (five varieties): Mrs N. Hughes and Miss O. Brown 1 eq., Mrs Mclntyre and Mrs Browning 2eq. Best bloom, Mrs G. Brown 1, Mrs Mclntyre 2, Miss O. Brown 3. TISBURY Mrs Ramsay presided at the annual meeting of the Tisbury Women’s Institute. The annual report and balancesheet were presented and adopted, the balance-sheet showing a credit of £4 19/8. Mrs Ramsay congratulated the institute on its creditable balance. The election resulted as follows: President, Mrs McDermott; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames P. Johnston and Gallately; secretary, Mrs Girvan; treasurer, Miss M. McCann; competition secretary, Mrs Gellately; Press correspondent, Mrs P. Johnston; committee, Mesdames McDermott, Girvan, Gellately, P. Johnston, Jacquiry and Miss McCann. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Ramsay and Mrs Clapp for coming to the meeting. The motto was: “Look before you leap,” and the roll call, “A demonstration I would like.”

The competitions resulted: Darning a sock: Mrs McDermott 1, Mrs McCann 2, Mrs P. Johnston 3. Best bloom, Miss McCann 1, Mrs Penny 2, Mrs P. Johnston 3.

A demonstration was given on tatting by Mrs McCann.

WAIANIWA

Mrs Suggate presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Waianiwa Women’s Institute. The motto was: “Count Your Blessings,” and the roll call, “Subscriptions, please.” Mrs Suggate and Mrs Young were chosen as delegates to the annual council meeting. A debate, “Summer v. Winter” was followed with interest, the following taking part: Mesdames Suggate, Lane, Fraser, C. Kennedy, I. Robertson and Miss G. Ronald. Song charades were given by Mesdames Fraser and Bruland.

Invitations were received to the Long Bush, Kennington and Spar Bush Institutes’ birthday parties. The competitions resulted:—Butter Scotch: Miss M. King 1, Mrs Bruland 2, Mrs Fotheringham 3. Article made from one yard of material: Mrs G. Lindsay 1, Mrs Lane 2, Miss M. Young 3. Best bloom: Mrs Suggate 1, Mrs Fotheringham 2, Mrs Hunter 3.
