TEMPERANCE UNION
I At the monthly meeting of the South ■ Invercargill branch of the Women’s I Christian Temperance Union Miss Mcj Callum presided. Members heard a rei port from Miss V. Jamieson on the anI nual conference recently held in Weli lington. Miss Jamieson, surveyed all I new measures advanced by the conI ference for work this year, enumerated i the various proposals, and suggestions I debated that may aid workers in their I aspirations, and offered some new hints j that may make work to be attempted i more interesting, besides helping to I stabilize any good work already estab- • lished. It was also reported that a deputation of nearly 200 women waited on | the Minister of Health (the Hon. P. I Fraser) and requested a stricter en- | forcement of the licensing laws, especially against Sunday trading, a better censorship of liquor advertisements, and the education of young people about the potential danger of alcohol as a beverage. Miss Jamieson received a very hearty vote of thanks for her comprehensive report.
