GORE

TAR-SEALING OF STREETS PROPOSAL TO RAISE LOAN The question of tar-sealing the streets of Gore has been discussed by the Gore Borough Council on several occasions and at last night’s meeting of the council it was decided to place before the ratepayers a proposal to raise a loan of £6500 for tar-sealing purposes. Four streets, William, Canning, Eccles and Crewe streets, were added to the I original list of streets last evening. The following streets are included in the schedule:—Fairfield, Ardwick, Wigan, Crombie, Albany, Devon, Irwell, Norfolk, Preston, Hyde, Mersey, East, Broughton, Railway Esplanade, William, Canning, Eccles and Crew :. Those present at the meeting were: Tire Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and Crs E. G. Wallace, J. A. Baldey, N. Robson, T. Sim, G. C. Hamilton, R. S. Green, J. C. Ray, A. V. Latty and P. R. Mallon. LOAN FOR BATHS A suggestion by Cr G. C. Hamilton that while the council was taking a poll to raise a loan for tar-sealing purposes it should also take a poll to borrow £3OOO for the erection of swimming baths in Gore was adopted at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council. Cr Hamilton said that he did not wish to be misunderstood in the matter. There had been so much talk about the council being against the erection of baths in the town that he considered the ratepayers should again be given the opportunity to vote on the matter. As the council was going to take a poll to raise a loan for tar-sealing, it would not be any further expense to take a poll about the baths. Cr A. V. Latty asked if the question of a site would be considered when the poll was taken. “I think that it would be more businesslike to leave the matter of a site to the council,” said Cr Hamilton. Cr Latty said that he differed on that point. If the baths were put on some of the sites that had been suggested they would prove to be a “white elephant. ’ Cr Hamilton said that it had been proved that baths were not a financial success wherever they were situated. It was his wish to see the ratepayers take a vote on the matter and have it settled.

Cr Hamilton’s motion that a poll be taken to raise £3OOO for the purpose of erecting baths was carried without dissent. HIGH SCHOOL BOARD The report of the rector (Mr E.’ H. W. Rowntree) to yesterday’s meeting of the Gore High School Board of Governors stated that 269 pupils were on the roll, 10 pupils having left since the beginning of the year. The roll at the hostel was now 33, an increase of one on last month’s total. The roll for the evening school was 133, compared with 154 at a similar period last year. “I regret to have to report,” stated the report, “that Miss Naylor, who has been on the staff for many years, will be leaving, as she has been appointed to a position on the staff of Avonside Girls’ High School, Christchurch. Miss M. Watson, commercial mistress, took up duties on April 12, and Miss Anderson, domestic science teacher, on April 14.”

Those at the meeting were:—Messrs E. C. Smith (chairman), Hugh Smith, H. C. Mac Gibbon, S. Rice, W. Bell and Henry Smith. Miss R. M. Naylor wrote tendering her resignation. The resignation was accepted with regret and it was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to Miss Naylor in recognition of her services. A complaint about the running of the Waikaka bus was received and it was decided that the chairman should make investigations. PHYSICAL WELFARE Advice was received at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council from the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry) that the following district committee had been appointed for the Gore area under the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act: The Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman), Messrs R. S. Green, G. C. Hamilton, P. R. Mallon and J. C. Ray, representing the Gore Borough Council, Messrs R. Fraser, J. Park, E. H. W. Rowntree and F. Wallis, jun., and Misses R. I. V. Aitken and R. M. Treloar.
