SOUTHLAND UNION MEETING DRAW FOR SATURDAY’S GAMES A request for a game at Invercargill on similar terms to those granted to the Bay of Plenty team last season was made in a letter from the Povert.y Bay Rugby Union received by the Southland Rugby Union last evening. The team proposed undertaking a tour of the South Island, stated the letter, and the writer asked what grant the Southland Union was prepared to make towards the cost of the tour. It was proposed to begin the tour with a match against Canterbury on June 10, and work south. “We desire that the match against your union be for the Ranfurly Shield,” the letter stated. Members agreed to leave the matter of arranging a game if possible to the Southland delegates attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union, and to inform the Poverty Bay Union that the game was not likely to be a challenge one. “That the appointment of all referees in matches with visiting teams be left in the hands of 'the home union,’ was the text of a remit to be submitted to the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union by the Thames Valley Union. In moving that the union support the remit Mr W. O. Ward said it was framed to obviate canvassing for games by referees. Too much canvassing had gone on in past years, “even to the extent of referees sending telegrams and boarding trains to communicate with the visiting teams.” Mr A. H. Courtis said that unfortunately the best referee was not always chosen. He thought the union should leave the matter to its delegates. The amendment that it be left to the delegates was adopted. The following transfers were granted: P. McMullan, Orepuki to Marist; L. Morton, Waikiwi to Invercargill; W. Sherriff, Lumsden to Star; G. H. Graham, Albion (Gore) to Star; A. Spence, Timaru Old Boys to Star; K. R. McPhail, Celtic (Timaru) to Pirates; A. E. Pilcher, Wanderers, Levin, to Invercargill; N. Black, Christchurch Technical Old Boys to Star; R. H. Ward, Hastings to Pirates. It was decided to draw the attention of clubs to the rule concerning players’ dress. Mr Ward reported that it . was the intention of referees to make an inspection of players’ dress (boots and uniform) next Saturday. The appointment of selection committees will be made at next meeting. FIXTURES'FOR SATURDAY The following fixtures were approved: Seniors.—Star v. Old Boys, at Rugby Park, at 1.45 p.m.; Marist v.
