TRESTLE BRIDGE FOR TRAFFIC

ALL-WEATHER HIGHWAY OVER SWAMP

(United Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, April 15.

Built at a total cost of £83,000, including the road approaches, the concrete trestle bridge over the Whirokino swamp, south of Foxton, was opened by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, the occasion being marked by an official gathering of local bodies and others. The trestle is the second longest concrete structure of its kind in the Dominion, being 90 spans each of 40 feet, the longest of its type being the Rakaia river bridge in Canterbury. The construction of this trestle provides an all-weather route on the important Wellington-Auckland highway. On numerous occasions in the past floods have seriously interrupted traffic. Plans are under way for a new bridge over the river at the southern end, the trestle replacing the old humpback bridge.
