LIGHTS ON BICYCLES
ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN I PLANNED (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 15. A special enforcement campaign against cyclists riding at night without lights or proper rear reflectors will begin on Monday week according to an announcement by the Minister of Transport (the Hon. R. Semple). A circular has been sent to all the enforcement authorities and it is hoped to make the drive the most efficient ever organized in the Dominion. It is being instituted purely in the interests of the cyclists themselves and is based upon experience during the late autumn last year. It is pointed out that in the summer the densest traffic is in the daylight hours, but with a shortening of the days after daylight the risk increases and during the early winter frosts and rain decrease the stopping distances and reduce the visibility, allowance for which is not made by any road user. The cycle represents the slowest type of vehicle and consequently it is being constantly overtaken, hence stress is laid upon the need for an effective rear light or mirror.
