FUTURE CONTROL BY COUNCIL

PUBLIC LIBRARY TO CHANGE HANDS COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE OF RECOMMENDATIONS The Bluff Athenaeum will in future be controlled by the Bluff Borough Council and, as a municipal institution will be entitled to the benefits from the Government country library service. The decision of the council, which has been eagerly awaited by subscribers was given at a meeting held in the council chambers when the recommendations of the special library committee were adopted completely. The committee reported that it had conferred with the Bluff Athenaeum committee on the proposition that the council take over the control of the athenaeum, together with the whole of its assets, and recommended: —That the Bluff Borough Council accept the proposition put forward by the Bluff Athenaeum Committee; that the necessary legislation be enacted to transfer to toe Mayor, councillors and burgesses, toe whole of the assets of toe Bluff Athenaeum; that the Athenaeum Committee supply a list of assets with estimated values including a list of subscribers, outstanding subscriptions, and so on; that until such time as the necessary legislation is enacted an agreement be prepared giving toe Bluff Borough Council immediate control. The recommendations were adopted. The library will officially become toe council’s property as soon as toe necessary legislation is passed although the council will assume control almost immediately. LIBRARY AT SCHOOL OPENING EXPECTED SOON The newly-established library at the Bluff Public School is expected to be open to the pupils in toe near futures At the monthly meeting of toe Bluff School Committee it was reported that toe necessary shelving had been erected, and the indexing system introduced by Mr G. Muir was acknowledged with thanks. There were present Messrs F. H. Pearce (chairman), C. T. Beaton, D. E. S. Mason, O. F. Metzger, N. Andersen, E. McKenzie, H. A. Ferguson and G. Muir. The question of conveying pupils living at Green Point and Ocean Beach to toe school was again discussed. Mr Andersen was requested to submit a report on toe residents’ agreement or otherwise with the suggestions put forward by toe committee at its last meeting. Mr Pearce reported on toe visit of the principal of the Southland Technical College (Mr C. A. Stewart) to discuss a proposal to introduce evening classes at the port. It was decided ' > confer further with Mr Stewart to arrange for toe issue of a circular outlining toe proposal for toe benefit of householders interested in toe scheme. It was decided to invite the Bluff School Jubilee Committee to be present at toe next meeting to discuss the suggestion that a social function be held annually. v The chairman said that the site for the proposed new dental clinic would be selected by toe architect of the Southland Education Board, and arrangements were now in hand to call tenders for the immediate erection of the building. Approval wak given the appointment of Mrs D. McAhan as assistant mistress at the school. The resignation of Miss L. Hoffman from the teaching staff was accepted with regret. FULL PORT TODAY With six ships expected to be in port at Bluff today the wharves will be at their busiest for some time, and it is doubtful if all toe vessels will secure a berth. The ships expected to be working are the Federal liner Northumberlond and the Union Company’s vessels Kauri, Wainui, Waitaki, Karetu and Poolta. As toe latter is coming to discharge coal from Westport she will probably have to wait in toe stream until the Waitaki has finished working and leaves the inside berth vacant.

The presence of so many vessels in port at one time will also doubtlessly cause a greater demand for labour which, it is believed, it might be difficult to meet.
