SUBSIDIES FOR EMPLOYMENT

NO NEW WORKS TO BE UNDERTAKEN

BLUFF BOROUGH COUNCIL Advice that under certain circumstances subsidies would still be available but that no new works were to be undertaken without authority was received from the Department of Labour at the monthly meeting of the Bluff Borough Council. It was stated that all men over 60, who would now be eligible for the pension, would go off the jobs on April 14. There were three of these on the council’s undertakings. The Bluff Football Club was granted permission to take up collections and the use of the grounds for play. The club asked for a quotation for the erection of another light for evening practice, and the council decided to give a quotation. It was decided to grant W. Hannah, of Theodore street, a footpath entrance to his property, and that the Electric Light Committee report on the question of erecting a light in the same street. Water services were granted to the following: Bluff Harbour Board, for the slipway; G. Giles, Gore street; J. T. Martin, Elizabeth street; and W. Burte’nshaw, McDougall street, the three last-mentioned being residental services. ’ The transfer of a council leasehold from Mrs Barker to Mr Larby was approved, and the Mayor, Deputy-Mayor and the town clerk were instructed to execute the transfer.

It was decided to write to the Public Works engineer drawing attention to the state in which the contractor had left Point road, which the council considered should have been finished in November, but on which no work was at present being done. Reports on the water losses and the reconditioning of the crusher were considered. The report on the water losses was refererd to the Works Committee for further consideration, and it was decided that a joint report on the crusher be made by the town clerk and the borough foreman in collaboration with an engineering firm. It was decided to prohibit the parking of cars on the lawns at the soldiers’ memorial.

WORK ON BOYNE STREET Crs L. G. Newman, O. F. Metzger and James Ballantyne tabled' a notice of motion to rescind the decision to begin a new grade on the roadway about opposite Captain Schofield’s property in Boyne street and extending to Foyle street, to complete the footpaths and other works, and to concentrate the whole of the works staff on the completion of the construction on Boyne street, between Barrow and Foyle streets. Speaking to his motion, Cr Newman said that there was a reef of solid rock to be contended with. He was supported by Cr Ballantyne who seconded the motion.

Cr T, F. Doyle said that every job started should be finished and Cr G. T. Randall said the major portion to be removed was loose filling which had been deposited by a previous council and would be easily shifted.

The Mayor (Mr John Cameron) supported the motion, saying that the council Jjiad other more important jobs on hand and had not the staff to cope with the ordinary necessary work. The motion was carried by six votes to three, the Mayor and Crs A. E. Budd, C. G. Pilcher, Newman, Ballantyne and Metzger voting for it and Crs Doyle, Randall and G. Muir against it. Cr Newman then moved the following motion, notice of which had also been given, to replace the previous resolution when rescinded:—“That the grade of Boyne street, between Barrow and Foyle streets, be fixed at the existing level, and that the finishing off of the footpaths, the relaying of drainage, water mains and so on, be carried out as opportunity permits.” The following amendment was moved by Cr Randall and seconded by Cr Budd: “That the relaying of drains and water mains be carried out as opportunity permits.” The amendment was carried. MEETING OF LIBRARY SUBSCRIBERS TRANSFER TO BOROUGH APPROVED A meeting of subscribers to the Bluff Athenaeum was held on Thursday evening to consider the recommendation of the athenaeum committee to transfer the Campbelltown Athenaeum, its endowments and assets to the Mayor, councillors and burgesses of the borough of Bluff. A motion that the recommendation be adopted, which was proposed by Captain N. B. W. Haszard and seconded by Dr A. R. Ross, was carried unanimously. The secretary (Mr J. H. Young) was instructed to notify the Borough Council of the meeting’s decision.
