FORDSDALE SAILS FROM BLUFF _____ * 2550 TONS OF CARGO LOADED The Fordsdale sailed from Bluff last evening for Wellington. She will go from Wellington to Wanganui and thence to Auckland from where she will leave for London and West Coast of England ports, via Panama, on April 24. The Fordsdale loaded about 2550 tons of cargo at Bluff, including a big quantity of frozen meat, 14,000 cases of apples from Central Otago, cheese, and wool bought at the last Invercargill wool sale. The motor-vessel Tamatea sailed from Bluff at 9 a.m. yesterday for Stewart Island and returned with a cargo of cased fish at 3 p.m. The motor-vessel Ranul (Mr J. W. Thompson, master) sailed last evening with cargo for Milford Sound. The Mahana will arrive at Bluff from Lyttelton on May 5 to load. She leaves Bluff for Halifax, London and Newcastle on May 10. Her cargo from Bluff will comprise a big quantity of frozen meat, cheese and general cargo. The Union Steam Ship Company advises that the Waimarino will now leave Auckland today for Lyttelton direct; thence to Dunedin and Bluff. She is due at Bluff about Thursday. April 20 and will probably sail the same day for Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington and Auckland. Outward bound fr.om London, the Remuera has sent a message-to say that she expects to arrive at Suva today. She is due at Wellington to disembark passengers on April 22, and will discharge cargo at Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. The Napier Star, which left London on Saturday April 8 for New Zealand, via South ALlea, is due to arrive in New Zealand on June 1 to load far the United Kingdom. The Government motor-ship Maui Pomare will leave Wellington on April 18 for Apia and Niue. The Waitaki was to leave Melbourne on April 12 for Bluff and is due here on April 17; thence to Dunedin (due April 18), Lyttelton and Wellington. IMPROVEMENTS AT MELBOURNE The Melbourne Harbour Trust is calling for tenders for the. excavation of the Appleton Dock, where six berths are to be provided at a cost of about £750,000, as the first step in a scheme for 21 berths in the harbour costing more than £3,000,000. Construction of the first six will take about three years, and the method to be adopted is that as the top soil is removed a suction dredger will excavate the lower strata to a depth of 32 feet, cutting inland for about 1100 feet. The dredge is already working at the entrance to the docks removing silt which has accumulated since the work was suspended during the depression in 1930. The dry soil will be used for filling and for making embankments. Spoil from the suction dredger will go to fill in low-lying areas of the West Melbourne swamp. Four berths will be constructed on the west side of the dock, and the work will then be extended to the east side, where two more berths will be built. NEW AUCKLAND WHARF The Marine Department advises that the new Hobson Wharf at Auckland has been completed and is now in commission. Three fixed lights, green and orange, disposed vertically at elevations of 32ft, 26ft and 20ft respectively, will be exhibited from the centre of the northern end of the wharf. THE PORT QUEBEC The Port Quebec, which is being built at Sunderland by J. L. Thompson and Sons for the Port Line, will be similar to the Port Montreal, Port Halifax and Port St. John now in service for the M.-A.-N.Z. Line. She will be a single screw ship of about 5000 tons gross, 433 feet long, and with a beam of 59 feet. She will, however, be faster than the earlier ships. NEW SOVIET MOTOR-SHIPS The keels of three fast motor-ships, the Chapayev, Ulianov and Pugachev, of 3000 tons each, have been laid down at the Mariupol yards, on the Sea of Azov.
